Steam games into external drive used on different computers?

Is this possible? using an external drive to install steam games and using that drive to play games on different pcs?
 
don't see why not, steam syncs saves to the cloud iirc, I can even play games on my laptop that are installed on my pc if on the same network (never tried it though)

You'll have the most success installing steam on the portable drive itself and the games there as well.

I believe that will get you what you want.
