Steam: Backing Up Games Causing "Updates"?

Has anyone else had this issue?

Every time I back up a game, i.e. simply right-click and create a back up, the next time I go to launch the game I get the Steam pop-up that takes about 2min to "update" the game.

It's been happening for quite a while, though it started out of nowhere, and I've no idea why, and happens every time with every game. I don't believe it's really "updating" anything at all. Just want to find out exactly why it might doing this and if anyone else has experienced the issue.
 
Steam's forums are incredibly helpful when you have problems. I'm sure you can probably find a related thread with one search.
 
It's normal steam and likely new advertisement crap being populated. Steam sucks but they do tend to give away a lot of games at a low cost.
 
This is probably the new file format that steam is using. But I agree, check the steam forums for details.
