Static sounds when changing volume

My beloved Sennheiser PC-360 G4ME headphones have started giving me static sounds whenever I am adjusting the volume on them, and sometimes the sound isn't equal between left and right earcup. If I play with the volume a lot, the static will disappear and the sound will be equal left/right.

What does this mean? Could it be caused by dust? My house is pretty dusty because of my 3 large dogs. Is there a way to avoid this? Does it signal the upcoming demise of my headset? I remember that my Cambridge/Creative Desktop Theater 2500, purchased in 1999, use to do the same thing, and eventually stopped working, either because of that or something else I don't know...

Does anyone know?

Your potentiometers are getting old and oxidized. They can be revived by buying a can of potentiometer cleaner spray and spraying the root of the potentiometer while turning the volume knob repeatedly between max and silent positions.

You'll need to open the chassis to be able to spray the pot though. So do it only if you're familiar with electronics and at least make sure you unplug the amplifier from the wall before opening the case.

If you're unsure, give the job to a friend or a professional. It should take about 10 minutes for a person who knows what he's doing.
