hello folks.

I recently bought a refurbished dell xps 15 l502x. excellent laptop. came in great shape and has very good jbl speakers. the problem, though, is that it's producing a constant static sound from the right speaker. not loud, but annoying when the room is silent. it doesn't vary in intensity with the volume set, but it does disappear when I mute the computer. plugging in headphones I can hear the static from the right ear as well.

I chatted with dell support and they said that, since the static is also present on earphones, it's definitely a software issue. they advised me to reinstall windows from scratch.

not a pleasant thing to do, so I tried a bunch of things. updated all the drivers, then also tried uninstalling the audio drivers and letting windows automatically install them. device manager shows High Definition Audio Device twice under "Sound, video and game controllers", instead of Realtek... and Intel... audio drivers, but the static is still there. there's no scenario where it isn't there, except when the sound is off altogether.

as far as I can tell, it should be a soundboard issue or something like that. that is, a deeper hardware issue, not speakers, but not software related either. am I right? is there anything else I should try? I haven't reinstalled windows yet. any chance of that working after I reinstalled all the drivers?

there's still plenty of time left in the warranty so I'm not in a hurry. shipping it off would be a pain in the arse though, so I'll try anything before doing that.

problem solved. had it repaired under warranty, and it basically consisted of replacing the entire motherboard - since the sound board is built into it.

so for future reference: a sound problem on the speakers that also happens when using earphones means it's either a driver problem, which can be easily checked, or a physical problem on the soundboard.
