My Promedias are a bit old but I like them a lot, so I'm hoping I can figure this out.

For the past few months, I've been having issues with the control pod. Specifically, sometimes when I used the on/off switch, the right front channel would cut out or lose volume. I could fix this by toggling the on/off switch until it worked. It took me awhile to figure out that root cause, but easy enough fix, just don't use the on/off.

This weekend I moved. Unfortunately when I plugged in my promedia system, I was met by very loud constant static. After some narrowing down:
- Static is on both satellites and sub (if pod on/off switch is on, obviously) and also headphone jack
- Static exists even if pod isn't plugged into soundcard

I opened up the sub and couldn't find anything wrong. I opened up the control pod and also couldn't find anything obviously wrong.

Due to the previous issues with the control pod and the fact that the static is in the headphone jack too, I suspect the pod is the problem. Do you think cleaning the on/off button and knobs with contact cleaner (as recommended for other pod problems) is worth trying? Do I try to somehow find a new pod? Is there anything known that can cause this problem?
 
Try cleaning the pod controls with contact cleaner.

If that doesn't work the sub (amps are inside the sub) might have issues. You might need to get the sub repaired. Or it might just be the pod needs to be replaced. Either way, the fixes aren't too cheap.
 
I've seen a few posts of Klipsch Promedia amps having static (with other strage sounds). I had this symptom on my Promedia 4.1 a few years back. What I found was that the problem was in the little volume control/power switch board that hangs underneath the primary satellite speaker. It has been a few whiles back, but from what I remember, the board had conformal coating, which made repair a little more difficult. Using a plastic poker, I poked around and could make the symptom come and go. I don't remember finding any obvious bad solder joints under magnification, so I just reflowed a few solder joints around a small chip. Seems like it was an 8 pin dip, but like I said it was a few years back. Reflowing the solder joints fixed the problem. However, I remember thinking that the problem was likely inside the chip and that the heat from the reflow happened to fix it. I guess if it was a multi-layer board, I could have fixed a bad connection on one of the middle layers. Anyhow, I got lucky, and never had the problem again. It's been like 5 years ago.
