I was just curious if anyone else is having problems with static shorting their box out when you touch the chrome panel just beneath the door and the front bezel....i just put this new rig together last night and have shorted it out 5 times already :eek:
 
:eek: it sounds like there something serioulsy wrong there, i would check to make sure there arent any exposeedd wires touching the case, i've seen wires get cut by the solder points on the back of the mobo a few times
 
alright....i've since gotten a new computer and made sure none of the wiring is touching metal.....everything was going fine and then i touched the front of the case right by the power/reset buttons. i saw a lil blue static spark and the computer again rebooted. could it just be the dry weather and low humidity causing this or is there maybe something not grounded correctly? i've got no loose wiring or anything... :confused:
 
Dude, sounds like _some_thing is connected to your case thet isn't supposed to be. Remove PSU, set on plastic, power on computer, try again.
 
A wire inside the PSU might be stray
Stray Wire > Metal PSU casing > Comp Case > Which then grounds itself to you :)
 
The chassis of the PSU and the case itself should be earthed. Perhaps it isn't? You could try making an earth strap to make sure it's grounded - the easiest way would be to take a molex fan adaptor or the like, remove all but the black wires/pins, strip on end, and wrap around a screw on the chassis somewhere. Once the case is earthed, and static charge from you will go straight to ground.
 
I'm betting it's plugged into a non-grounded electrical outlet. Either that, or the outler "looks" like a grounded outlet, but actually isn;t grounded.

I suggest getting one of those outlet testers from your building cneter, and testing the outlet. They're like $5.00 and well worth the $$$.

You'd be surprised the problems a non-brounded outlet will can cause to computers.
 
Getting zapped by touching any grounded appliance/object doesn’t sound so unusual to me. Is it the only thing in your house that zaps you? No doorknobs or light switches? Are you in a real dry climate? Get a humidifier.
 
well i pulled the reset connector from the mobo to stop the resets until i can test the outlet. we just had an arctic front blow some cold dry air down here and i'm gettin zapped on practically everything i touch. :rolleyes:
 
I guess if you're getting shocked with everythign you touch, then getting shocked when you touch the case. I got a super lanboy here, and it's never done that to me. Now, if it resets every time it does this shock thing, that stuff doesn't sound right.
 
put on some shoes with rubber soles, touch something metal before touching your computer.

its real dry here too, i notice when i pet the cats i keep shocking them :D
no problems with the computer though.
 
Pulling the reset switch won't do you any good, unless your pushing the switch when it resets (which is what it's supposed to do anyways).
