I recently built a Intel Core Duo E8400 3.0 ghz with a ASUS P5N-D mobo. Everything worked fine, however it was running a little hot.
To remedy this, I applied arctic silver as directed. After replacing the CPU chip and attemping to start the PC, nothing happens. Monitor stays blank and it does not boot at all. The fans run (including the heatsink fan.)
There is no damage to the chip or mobo that is visible. The only out of the ordinary thing is the CPU is being held in place by the heatsink... it will fall out otherwise. There is a metal piece that is supposed to lock over the CPU in between it and the heatsink.
It ran fine without this metal piece before.
Any ideas and help would be appreciated.
Edit - There was an issue prior to removing the chip and replacing it. After shutting the system down when attempting to restart it a lot of times it wouldn't fully boot. I would have to hit the restart button and then sometimes it would give a boot failure. Eventually it would get to windows, but sometimes it would take several tries. It always at least gave the bios option screen.
