Guys,

I know I have not been folding in the past two or so months - I'm in Tanzania and my computers are in storage at friends house and no he would not let me leave em on 24/7 cause of the heat that they output. Free storage beats no storage.

I'm going to be back on the 7th in August but by then I'll be home at the 8th. What I will be able to do is fold on my MacBook C2D - I'm concerned about the heat output of this machine - at times it will go above 90c at full load (I don't know if folding at 90c and plus for 24/7 would be plausible unless I do something to change that) and my other rig at storage will remain in storage until I go back to college and then I'll start it up.

The question remains here for me -
Macbook 2.13Ghz C2D - which client is the best?
Gaming Rig (AMD x2 3800 and 1900xtx) - SMP client and/or GPU Client?

And yes I do have an access to the lab that I had borged last school year and permission seeming likely that it'll be granted to me once more + new lab computers too ;)

I'm hoping to hit 100Ghz within three months. Mark my words RELIC - IT'S ALL FOR THE [H]ORDE

With the MacBook, I believe the Mac SMP client should do fine. Alternatively, BootCamp into Linux64 and run the REAL SMP. :)

Gaming rig, definitely the SMP. This question comes up often; I think the general concensus is the PPD will be roughly the same, but the X2 will draw far less power. (Plus, you don't have to worry about running your GPU at 3D settings 24/7.)
 
I found that the frame times on a 3800 when useing the SMP client was right at the point of missing deadlines with the slower protiens.

If heat is a problem with that macbook (I've used one, so I know it can be quite toasty) you might consider setting it to run at 50% or 75% utilization. That would help battery life too, should you be running it on battery power.

Not true. My X2 3800+ always meet the deadlines. The average crunching time is 50-60 hours per WU, well within the deadlines (tightest is 72 hours and max is 96 hours). The thing here is to let it run 24/7 and if you close the client during workhours, it will miss for sure.

However, for points, i think it's better with a console client and a GPU client with those X2 since it will be the same PPD or slighty better while doing more science.

 
Welcome back Jon and let us know if you need anything! You could get a laptop cooler to help with the heat.

OT - My XP 3800 always hits deadlines as well. At first, it was sluggish and missed two WU's months ago, now no problem at all.
