Starting some time-lapse

that looks awesome, How often do you take shots? and what software do you use to put it all together?

Shots were timed with DSLR Pro. I threw it together using Quicktime Pro, exported the movie at the original size, then brought into a Premire 720p project.

When I start getting serious, I'll take it into After Effects.

But there are other solutions for doing this. I may just buy a device that fires the camera w/out the need for software/computer. And the cost isn't huge. Cheaper than getting a laptop with supporting hardware. Then I'll need a CF card greater than 4GB.

that software looks pretty cool, do you know if there is something similar but for Macs?

I guess I could always run it in parallels or bootcamp.

A Mac time-lapse application I know of is called iStopMotion.

Oh, I was shooting at 2 frames per minute. I might bump this up to 4 next time for night shots, and 10 for daytime shots.

very nice work lamont! i love the city tucked away over the hills.

what were your settings for the camera?

Aperture on that lens was like 5, and exposure was at 10 seconds. ISO @ 400.

I got some hamsters coming over to my cube today. So there's my next project }:-D>

A friend of mine pointed me to a tutorial that would do a better job at telling you how to modify the Canon timer (Model# TC-80N3. $130 @ B&H Photo.). I can't find that tut, so here is a German version.

http://www.astropictures.de/ausloeser.htm

You will need:
  • 1/8" mini-plug to 3/32" mini-plug adapter from Radio Shack.
  • 6' of stereo mini-plug audio cable 1/8" to 1/8" (Also from Radio Shack).
There are tons of ways to do this. Some just splice into the cable, the link above has the guy cutting off the original connection. You can even buy an adapter from some guy off a forum.

Or you can do it the [H] way and break out the soddering gun and dremmel. Took apart the housing, drilled a hole in the back. Cut the 6' audio cable in half, stripped the tips and ran that through the hole. The I proceeded to sodder the ends in place. So I can use this for the other Canon camera's as well.

Keep these wire configs in mind:

Red/Shutter/Red
White/Focus/Copper or Yellow
Copper/Return/Black

hey this is way cool!

i got some questions if you dont mind:
1. is there a tutorial on this somewhere?
2. what cord is used to connect camera -> pc to use the software? i use an xti
3. what settings were configured in the software?
do you just setup your shot, set the interval, let it run, then come back?
4. how long does this timelapse cover?
5. what kind of lens were u using?
6. can you give details on how you threw it together in quicktime pro? how long is each frame/shot displayed for?

  1. A tutorial on time-lapse? Or how to modify the Canon timer? Tutorial on TL photography.
  2. A regular USB mini to full size USB is all you need. Came with the camera. If you're on WinXP64 you're screwed (like me). Which was why I got the timer.
  3. For the software, I changed the f-stop and speed. Then depending on what I am going to shoot, change the frame-rate. Then I just hit start and walked away for a few hours.
  4. A timelapse can take hours or days/weeks. You would need the Canon AC adapter.
  5. Lens for the first two were this Russian Midnight Special from eBay. Ultra-wide angle lense.
  6. The framerate is arbitrary. But no matter what I shoot, it's 27.9 or 30fps in Quicktime Pro. Quicktime Pro is used to compile the frames into a single file for Premire/After Effects.

Keep in mind that if you use the software, you're going to be tied to a computer which is hard to take around. The solution with the timer is meant so that all you need is the camera and timer which gives you more freedom in locations.

And if you're doing location shoots: watch the weather!! Use rubber bands and plastic to cover the camera/timer/computer.

thanks!

yah, i plan to try on my balcony. will check the forecast make sure it doesn't rain lol.

i guess it is best i get an ac adaptor for the camera as well?

so you shoot JPEGs for this then?

does cropping occur since you do a 720p project or is the image just stretched to fit 16:9?

any thoughts for showing on a hd tv? I guess that exporting to a dvd make things a little less sharp?

i guess after trying this i will look into that timer so i can have more flexibility.
btw did you modify the timer for use with the xt or was it for something else?

If you don't have an AC adapter, you're fine for a few hours. For HD footage, I author all the videos at 720p. When I do more serious stuff, it will be done at 1080p/60fps. You can shoot on the smallest jpeg settings on the cam. Gives you more room and it's still bigger than 1080p. For playback, I just use my comp. I don't have a 1080p TV set yet.

but doesn't 720p not match the aspect ratio of the photos (1.5:1 vs 1.78:1) ? so i'm wondering if you're cropping the photos to fit the 1.78:1 or just stretching them to fit?

Growing some epsom salt crystals overnight. Will post video tomorrow morn if it's decent.

For some reason it didn't even begin to crystalize. The site said it should take about an hour. So I had 8 hours of a bowl of water doing nothing. Great.

But I did set up another with a flower wilting. We will see how that goes when I get home.

Done, came out almost like I thought. The flickering is annoying and I didn't WB as I set this up before I went to work.

DL movie ::here:: (Quicktime)
