I want to startup my psu without anything including the internal fan connected to this.

as there will be no load on the psu I figure cpuple of minutes without fan should be a no problem right?

The reason for this is I want to test all my fans and harddrives and see which ones have lowest noise for my pc.

It'll be fine for bit. I wouldn't go longer then 20mins. The capacitors and shit should be able to hold up if it's a decent quality unit.

Mine ran for gods only knows how long until one day I reached down and felt an extreme amount heat. It had to have been a couple days without a fan, and that thing still is kicking.

I'd get a fan on it asap though.

At no load it should be safe to run the PSU without its fan running.

I have a follow up question.

I want to connect a gentle typhoon fan to it, and test the noise level at 7v and 5.5v.

To achieve this I will be connecting zalman resistors, will this cause any problem connecting the fan --- zalman --- psu?

my understanding is that the molex contact is 12v?

It will not cause any issues. The yellow wire in a molex connector is +12V and the red wire is +5V.

ok, then connecting 7v zalman to fan then to PSU will not harm it any way?

btw my Nexuz nx5000 fan is noisy as hell when I start the PSU without anything else, I guess it's running at fullspeed?

No, it should not.

That PSU should be very quiet in general. If it's noisy, then I would think there is something wrong with either the fan itself or the PSU's fan control circuitry. If you can RMA it, I would suggest that you do so.

Mine had been running on full load for a while before I realized the fan wasn't working. I could smell burning.

lol u can pretty much run the GT fan on full and its almost in-audable compared to most others ive heard. i have 2 of them on my h50.

Most PSU's run really quiet nowadays, most of the time you cannot even hear them, especially if they're using a 120mm or larger fan. The Seasonic X-series... now that's crazy, fan does not even start up under a low load. And there's barely any heatsinks inside too.
