Start over?

I know I made a thread similar to this earlier, but the circumstances have changed.

I have had pretty much every problem imaginable with this computer, and it's gotten to the point where I just want to start over. I would either part it out, or ebay it; keeping only the video card. With the money from that (and my parents said they would pitch in a bit as well as a birthday present), I would just start over and build a new computer. The new one wouldn't be that much faster than this one, but more be the equivilant of a hardware "reformat". I'm just tired of dealing with the constant problems this one gives me. Anybody think this is a good idea, and if I could build a comparible if not slightly better system for the price of selling the one in my sig(except the video card, speakers, and mabye sound card) + $200? Or am I just throwing money away?

I would probably be selling it as a complete computer sytem with 1GB of PC2100 RAM, and an older video card I have laying around, and then selling the Patriot XBL seperate. Also if I ebay it, I would throw in a pair of old speakers, an old keyboard, and an old mouse so I can sell it as a "complete" sytem.

I also have decided to stop worrying over every little part involved in overclocking, and just be happy with my computer at stock speeds (cept mabye the video card) and go for stability.

If I do go through with this, I would probably want to go SFF (not Shuttle; hate them). Unfortunatly, if it doesn't seem like I could go s939, as I have yet to find a single s939 mATX motherboard that has an AGP slot. Anybody know of one?

i would try to figure out what is wrong with it? does it run fine at stock? if you do sell it knowing that it is flaky then you will just be passing your problems onto someone else which may or may not be a good thing...

it might be something simple like a psu or memory that needs rma'ed..

it probably would be a waste of time and money, but i don't know what you have been through with it specifically...

except for the fact that shipping and time would add up.. i would just start replacing things one at a time.. for example.. buy a new psu.. and sell your current one on ebay.. then if it doesn't work.. try a new mobo, or memory or something.. you might wind up with half a new system and out $100.. but maybe that is better than having new everything and out $200... combatibility wise, i don't see anything wrong with that computer.. which makes me think it is something like a faulty component.. or maybe dirty power or corruption to the os from overclocking attempts or something.. it could be a lot of things.. but maybe getting a new computer won't even fix them... but if it is a bad part, then it will be fixed..

Hasn't been any single problem. First Windows got corrupted and was unable to format. Then the RAM started erroring, then my old video card died, then my psu and floppy got shorted (both still work), then my new stick of RAM died, then my video card drivers started screwing up, etc. It's been a chain of completely unrelated problems that have made my computer not work for almost 25% of the time I've owned it. Every time I get something fixed, something else stops working. It's stable now, but I still just want to be rid of the damn thing and start anew.

There isn't any 1 thing wrong with it, and it seems stable *knock on wood* right now; but it's gotten to the point where I can't enjoy it as much as I would like as I am always waiting and wondering what the next problem will be.

I know you didn't ask what the problem was, but it sounds to me like it's a PSU problem. I advise against starting over, but if you do at least try a new PSU before doing it.

Do you know there is nothing wrong with it? Have you tried a second PSU to see? Surely a friend of yours would let you borrow his/hers for a minute.

A second psu to see what? I've solved all the problems I've had with it. I'm just tired of doing that. I have had a problem every month since I bought the computer. I have fixed every problem, but I don't want to keep the thing even if there is nothing wrong with it now.

I'd have to agree...sounds like a power supply..........you may have temporarily solved the symptoms...but if you put new components in the case you have with the power supply you have.....you will probably wind up with the same problems.

What sounds like the power supply? I'm confused. These problems have been occuring over two seperate psus, and none of the problems were related. The video card dying was my own damn fault for thinking the included directions were correct for an arctic cooler; the second RAM was part of the bad shipment newegg got of Patriot XBL; the first RAM was because the people that built this for me in the beginning were too damn cheap to use real DDR400, and threw in some PC2100 with the id changed for it to run at PC3200.

Also, no, none of my friends would lend me a psu. Most are computer illiterate and the ones that aren't want to charge me to use it. When I started having worse problems, don't you think that was the first thing I checked? I rigged back up the psu that came with the case that I kept for just that occasion and they persisted.

this sounds like my mom and her van.. she keeps having problems.. some her fault.. some not... and really.. she could get a new car.. but technically there is nothing wrong with her's.. until she hits a manhole sticking up in the street that wipes out the bottom of the car, or picks up nails in her tires.. stupid shit like that..

so.. you could get a new computer. . but you might have problems again.. maybe you can get most of a 2nd computer.. and run 2 computers for about a month.. then kinda mix and match parts.. till you get something that runs fine... and sell the other off... i wouldn't sell a an a64 as a complete computer with pc2100 in it.. even if you have a ton.. it might be worth it to get some $80 a gig valueram since it is popping up now.. and sell the 2100 seperate.. it is minor things like that which will bring down the overall price of the computer if you try to sell it whole.. but really.. just part it out on the forum..

really.. since you went through as many parts as you have.. it will continue to work fine..

or you can always buy a dell.. casue they work perfectly.. </sarcasm>

i personally would just keep at it since it is working fine now.. because there is a good chance that your "new" computer will go through the same kinds of problems.. that is a downfall of building them yourself..

The PC2100 RAM is exactly why I would ebay it. (Though I may be able to get it working at PC3200 again if I spend a day tweaking it). They don't know the difference. I've dumped around $600 into a computer that cost $1100 originally trying to fix the problems. I'm tired of it and I can'tn spend that kind of money. I would get another and swap parts, but I don't have enough money for that. The money to get the new one would come purely from this.

Was kinda hard to follow in your earlier posts.......but it still sounds like a power issue......do you perhaps live in an older building or out in the boonies....????? We had to build a battery setup for a friend of mine with an inverter to give him stable AC there was so much fluctuation in his line voltage........check your wall outlet with a multimeter. Unstable line voltage can manifest itself in many horrible ways.......as for windows getting borked......your guess is as good as mine.

All I was saying was all the problems I have had in the past with this computer. I don't have any of those problems any more.

I had similiar issues with a build for my mother, we purchased a UPS for the power and so far so good.

Also, any idea how much I could get for it with the video card included? I love this card to death, but if I went SFF with a monarch, I'd have to get pci-e; almost definatly an x800xl.
