In XP, customizing start menus for each user was as simple as deciding which links go under the different start menu folders.. either the default one for all to see, or individual user folders for only one user to see. In Windows 7 there are no separate start menu folders and I cannot seem for the life of me to figure out how to do this seemingly very simple task.

I have two user accounts. I want for each user to be able to decide which start menu short cuts to show up without affecting other users..shouldn't be complicated. Never was before.

Set your folder options to display "hidden files and folders" and "system files".
Then navigate to:
C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\

I haven't moved something from one to the other but I have edited folders and shortcuts in both locations.

Right click on the "All Programs" button in the Start Menu. "Open" will take you to the current users folder and "Open All Users" opens the All Users Start menu folder.

I'll have to remember that, its a lot easier than the way I was getting there.

I pin shortcuts to the User Start Menu and All Users Start Menu to the favorites pane for quick access
