So for about a week, everytime I restart my system, the power cord that connects to my Radeon 9800 Pro kept shorting out, I've been scrambling, trying to figure out wtf is going on, from replacing my psu to reseating all the internal components etc. I had just about given up.

Well, I just downloaded a Starfoce removal tool on a whim and lo and behold, it found Starforce drivers on my system, don't ask me how they got there, I have no idea or I just plain forgot. Anyway, I removed them, restarted.

And voila! No more shorting, nothing, everything is smooth sailing.

Can someone explain to me, how exactly Starforce f--ked up my system? Isn't it a system-level optical driver of some kind?

first, how do you know the power cord to your video card was really shorting out?

i suppose i could have worded it better. the molex power connector that was plugged into my radeon went, so i unplugged the one connected to my dvdrom and plugged that one into my radeon instead, that too went, and after that, so did the other one i plugged in. that was when i said fuck it, replaced the mobo, got a new psu, took out all pci cards i had, unplugged my opticals, updated the bios etc. took it to a friend's place to isolate as many variables as possible.

same thing happened on the first reboot. then i happened to get ahold of the starforce removal thing that someone linked. after that, no more problems on restart. so there are three blackened and brown molex power connectors that i'm staring at on my old psu (raidmaxx btw).

weird huh?

Well, starforce DOES hijack your cd/dvd drivers so that could be the cause for unstability.

People have had this kind of trouble with starforce. I try to stay away from games that have it on it because i dont trust anything that messes with device level drivers without your explicit permision (yes im sure its in the ToS but those are messes to read).

Did you try another video card when you were troubleshooting the issue? I hope so because that sounds like the culprit, not Starforce.

you know, i just started play splinter cell chaos theory, and after my install ive been having some dvdrom drive power issues...

starforce is the worst p.o.s out there, there's a anti-starforce site somewhere that lists all games that install this cr*p :D

I just looked up the list, and I have installed exactly one game the uses it, I installed that game months ago though and I haven't noticed any problems. What's the deal?

I haven't had any issues with starforce. I've installed Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on 2 different computers and they both work fine.

i downloaded the Splinter Cell demo and i didnt even know what starforce was at the time. i would get directx errors and this went on for a couple of weeks until i found that i had starforce. i used the starforce removal tool that somebody posted in the forums and have never had a problem in 6 months now.

Starforce killed my cat!

And it wasn't finished with me there. Fricken Starforce went as far as to ruin dinner last night! I think it got into my oven timer and caused all my food to burn!

To the OP - Nice one!
