StarDrive

I haven't played it, but it looks interesting, i may pick it up. I have always been a big fan of 4x games, even though i kinda suck at them. :)

I'm rocking the Beta, or at least I have played a few games. It's developed by one person, so it's an impressive effort. There is a lot to like about it. The diplomacy screens with the different races are a hoot, really remind me of StarControl.

Combat is interesting, planet colonization, improving and invading are pretty good. Of course it is missing some stuff, there's a lot of balance issues but overall it is very fun. I look forward to the full release in a month.

Side note, there are a lot of awesome automation options. Colonization and planet management can be entirely automated which I love, as well as auto freighters to deliver goods to other planets.

It is sort of a mash up of Sins of a Solar Empire in its real time play and combat, and Masters of Orion.

I think I'm definitely going to check it out. Looks like it is fully Modable too? I was looking through the forums and saw it already had a couple mods lol.

Surprised nobody has posted about this game since it's now released. This is quite an enjoyable little game, and there are already some decent mods out for it. I'd recommend anybody interested to youtube some playthrough videos.

Game plays a lot like an 4X RTS and is more focused on combat (happens in real time) than economics. It even has a ground combat mechanic, which isn't often seen in 4X games. Someone compared it to a SINS/MOO hybrid, which seems pretty accurate. I'm not a big fan of scout rushing to grab artifacts/anomalies, but it really does give you a huge advantage.

I picked this up last night on Steam, downloaded in the Library and I can't wait to dive in tonight!

The game kinda reminds me of EVE except without the multiplayer aspect. With that said though my buddy tells me it has a pretty steep learning curve and the game progresses pretty slow. But when you're far enough in the game it really does take off and you end up putting a lot of hours into the game. Pretty interesting game actually.

If you want to watch some game play, I suggest OperationDx1's videos. He's making episodes on his game play, explaining what he's doing and why.

The learning curve is a bit steep and the game can seem to move slow because it's not turn based, but if it moved faster, you probably wouldn't enjoy the battles as much.

I haven't really touched it in a month, and I'm definitely curious what he improved. It was a solid game then that really just needed a lot of ease of use stuff. I've been wanting to play it more, other things have just been higher priority lately because I know I'll sink a decent chunk of hours into this if I do play it.

That's really helpful, my biggest complaint was how boring the first hour of the game was with few good worlds to colonize and having slug through quite a bit of research to unlock something new to build.

The anomaly hunt looks like it at least occupies your attention for a bit and results in some random unlocks to mix up the game.

Did he ever make it so ground troops are transported in a ship? Or are they still just left hanging out there to die to stiff breeze in space?

A steam friend said that StarDrive is "buggy as holy hell".

I beta tested Endless Space, so I'd recommend Endless, even though I could roll over the AI during Beta ( the devs are working on the AI ).

thanks to all who posted the youtubes...I was looking at this when I got sick of Endless Space (didnt take as long as I thought to not feel like bothering anymore :( )

I love Endless Space. I know a lot of people are put off by the combat, but I kinda liked it. I wish that the combat would have turned into a meta game CCG style.

I haven't been able to play StarDrive as much as I would have liked recently, but I did enjoy it. The videos helped me understand things as well. I know some people consider it a bug/exploit/cheat to grab anomalies and run w/o combat, but I've read that the computer does the same thing (so it isn't really a bug or exploit).

I did some minor testing of carriers, and I'm not certain of their actual worth. If you play this game, make sure you check out the mods. I'm using one that adds some more components/weapons, and I love it.

Sounds like it is just another half-finished simple-minded 4X. The 4X genre is really struggling lately. Civ5 dumbed down. Sword of the Stars 2 a permanently broken piece of garbage. Elemental: War of Magic, a disaster almost as bad as SoTS2. Endless Space a way overrated / overhyped generic 4X. Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, another generic 4X. Now StarDrive, AGAIN, another generic 4X (at least it isn't being hyped so much as Endless Space).

I realize in the case of StarDrive and Endless Space, part of the problem is limited resources. Nonetheless, this is getting ridiculous.

Bad times for 4X games...

Have you played Gods& Kings? It really brings Civ5 up to a different level. They fixed a lot of the AI issues and added some new layers of complexity to it. The next expansion sounds like it's going to add a lot of nice stuff to make it an even better game.

I'm pretty sure StarDrive is entirely developed by a single guy. Given that, he's done an amazing job imo. Sure it's got some quirks, but you can also completely mod the shit out of it.

I've put around 45 hours into the game (beta+retail). It is very well done and the only real problem is when you get massive amounts of ships together in one area your framerate drops, not as bad as it was in the beta (when it happened in beta it wasn't even playable, it is at least playable now and with more ships).

The game is made by one guy, he outsourced the art but all the programming/design/etc he did. Zero (name he uses on his forum) is a cool guy and fixes most bugs very quickly and is good at taking feedback and improving the game. He has said he will continue to work on the game as well, he is working on multiplayer currently iirc.

As for the game itself. It is solid. It is very much like MoO2. He has added features that are really great as well. Being able to automate freighters in your empire and have subspace projectors (travel faster) being automatically built between systems (both are optional and are off by default). The ship design is great with everything being module base, you can build your own custom versions of whatever ship hull you have and it gives you all the data as you are putting it together (how much it cost to make, how much ammo does it old, how much power is uses and how quickly it replenishes it, and other things), you point turrens in which direction you want their arcs of fire to cover etc. The other cool part of the custom built ships is, the AI will use them against you if you play against the race in another game. So as your designs get better the more of a challenge you are making for yourself in future games, granted if you make very specialized ships for certain types of things, the AI might not use it correctly, but it doesn't just use your designs it will use the ones already in the game as well. The other great feature I like is when you design your fleet with a drop down list of all the ship designs there are, if you have some ships in your empire that are not assigned to a fleet and you have that ship in your new fleet design it will ask if you want to requisition those ships and add them to the fleet and then you can put in the order for the rest of the ships for the fleet that are needed and it will spread the workload out across your empire so it gets build quickly.

The game is buggy and possibly missing some things. I would give it a bit of time so it can be patched up. Regardless of that, it is a very good game and can be compared to Master of Orion 2.

Thread necro via search.

I see Stardrive 2 on Steam right now. I'm eyeballing it. What's the word?

sad fact is, I've been playing this civ type of game since 1991...for the love of god, can someone please make a new strategy game NOT USING the civ fucking formula !!!

its so simple, now it takes ONE GUY to make the damn thing...yea, we've come a long way in 24 years...NOT !!

I disagree with that. I want a new Moo2 and MoM. I feel that all the ones that have tried to recreate them have failed. Not saying that some of them haven't been good but I don't think any of them have captured the feel of those two specifically.

Would love to hear from anyone who has Stardrive 2. I didn't care or the first one but this one looks better.

I have SD2, but have't had a chance to play it yet. From the videos I've seen on YT, it looks to be a huge improvement over SD1.
