The upgraded version of Blizzard’s sci-fi classic is now available for $14.99: as promised, the remaster offers 4K UHD graphics, enhanced dialogue and audio, matchmaking and leaderboards, and cloud saves.

Almost 20 years ago, Blizzard Entertainment released a game that would set the standard for the real-time strategy genre, inspire a generation of gamers, and show the world how powerful esports could be. Today, we are honored to bring a classic game loved by so many into the modern era. Today we launch StarCraft: Remastered.

Apart from tuning into today's live stream, I'd check out yesterdays as well - lots of good clips from that lol.
Day9 combining with iNcontroL, Tasteless, and Artosis reminded me of the good ol' days on State of The Game.

Starcraft was a pretty sweet game during its hey-day but a remastered version for $14.99 yea things are polished but its hard for me to pay 15 bucks for the same game just polished graphics which still look pretty simple. I guess they are trying to get the guys that love the nostalgia piece of it. This is a hard pass for me.

Especially now that the original version was just patched, so it now works with modern OSs and is free. So the question is free or $15 for new leaderboards and sounds.....

I fired up SC again when news of this first hit - couldn't stomach the low res graphics. I've been playing a lot of C&C RA2, which scales nicely with my monitor's resolution. After running mission 1 of SC, I decided I'd wait. Personally, I think I'll get $15 worth of entertainment from this. Way better value than a movie ticket!

I would have paid $20 to get rid of black bars. My friend actually uses an old computer with a CRT to play broodwar because he hates the pillar boxing so much.

With the Remastered edition, you can switch between the original and remastered versions mid-game by pressing F5.

I didn't think that the remastered version would be as big an improvement to the experience as it is, but it really is. The original looks like mushy green-pea soup by comparison, with huge black sidebards, and the mojo is consequently with the remastered version. And $15 really isn't a lot for such a big and great game package. Blizzard clearly had enough confidence in their remaster that they were willing to release the original for free alongside it.

Lets see, they went back and cleaned the code, the textures, increased functionality since now it works with modern hardware/resolutions/monitors, etc and people are complaining about spending 15 bucks?

Shit, I have burned 15 bucks in one lousy drink in a damn bar and didn't gave me the same enjoyment that Starcraft has done in the last 17 plus years.

How can digital games like this be traded? I tried to trade my license for the Nova Chronicles to my friend but Blizzard told me it violated their terms of service.

What would be absolutely kick ass is if the old Starcraft mods would work with the Remastered version as is.

I could damn sure get into some Godzilla and Paintball games :D

I'd buy copies for my kids and their others just for this.

I have played the first couple of Terran missions on SP, there is definitely significant amount of work gone into models and portraits.

Some portraits looks very similar to the original that you'd instantly recognise it (EG Wraith), but others it's very different (Raynor especially).

I didn't feel there was a lot of work done in the terrain though, it looked very indistinguishable from the original, the only one that really changed was minerals.

Otherwise, the models definitely looked sharp and the pixelation is gone. Some of the attack and death animations, I felt, was done better in the SC1 remaster than SC2 lol.

Overall, I felt the 15 is worth it, but I am more willing to pay for a texture upgrade than your average joe/jane.

Now someone should do C&C and Red Alert remastered. I tried playing them recently, but they kept crashing on a modern computer.

$15 bucks for an overhaul of the game? You pay more for a half slab of ribs and a side (not including a drink) at your local food places. If you look at the behind the scenes, they actually did revamp the code and textures as well while keeping the game true to how it was years ago. SC wasn't a "perfect" game and required patch after patch but what Blizzard game hasn't gone through all that?

It's actually quite amusing to watch players who started from SC2 go back to SC1. It's not a different game, but rather a different play style. Some of the things we take for granted in SC2 like automatic mineral gathering or tabbing through units are absent in the old SCBW, units control is much more frustrating due to the "dumb AI". I find it rather refreshing. It's like watching a young F1 driver in today's modern car get into an old school beast like the ones Senna used to drive.

Holy crap, the amount of people crying over $15 for a great remake to support modern systems while still being faithful to the original is hilarious.

    Its $15...

Comparability mode should help, but I would look at sound setting in the game, avoid setting it to use Direct Sound because that don't exist anymore. If you have the option set the sound API to something else that isn't Direct Sound or an older proprietary sound card API.

Of course depending on the game, you might not get an option.

The original sc1 set the bar for intensive sound . Seriously it made me feel the need for a sub.

I'm glad to see them seriously remaster it. Already purchased it.

Have to check this out. I find the new SC2 to be too complex for my tastes. So much rock/paper/scissors crap going on.

As of now, I would highly suggest not purchasing until Blizzard decides to fix their fucking game. I played a lot of Starcraft for the first 10 years and even with dial up and a mediocre computer, I did not lag..... Every fucking game I have been in has been lag city. HORRIBLE and nearly unplayable. After a quick search, it seems to be a pretty widespread issue. Blizz of course is denying responsibility at the moment blaming graphics drivers, xbox dvr, "start up programs", ect....

SC2 is the only game I have ever had to modify my cable modem/router to prioritize its traffic so it wouldn't constantly disconnect.

So I bought it last night and tried it out. I was mildly disappointed that it doesn't support 21:9 but I have to admit that was a stretch to hope for.

I found that I'm not that interested in playing the campaign. It's not the singleplayer experience I'm wanting to recapture, it's the multiplayer with friends. I hope my girls buy into it, maybe their men too. One sounded interested the other didn't. Funny thing is, the one that isn't interested is the one I thought would jump on it. But she's in school to be a big time animator, she said "Old Games .... meh !"
