We’ve been hearing rumors about a Starcraft MMO coming out for a long time now, and we are now seeing reports that say this may actually have some merit.

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."

Let me just say that the only reason I posted this story was because it and the P35 coverage seem to be the hot items of the weekend.

Now I could be wrong here, but I simply do not see Blizzard creating another product at this time that could potentially take money away from WoW. Yes it would still technically be sending the money to the same place but their present MMO is still bringing in amazing subscription numbers.

I would think that if Bliz had plans to do something along these lines they would perhaps wait until the WoW cow has been milked dry.

Yeah, but like the article says "with blizzard's timetables within the next 5 years". They could announce it today, but by the time it launches who knows how WoW will be doing.

i agree with Rich, even by announcing it they could lose subscribers for WoW considering that people may see that as an abandonment.

Granted blizzard's track record for abandoning games is pretty small as even their oldest games are still played a ton today.

They would be better off making starcraft2, as there are so many people worldwide waiting on it.

While this may be true, WoW isn't for everyone. Something like a World of Starcraft might appeal to a part of their fanbase that they're missing out on, depending on how they do it.

Seriously. I'd be all about traveling through space with a giant armada and blowing up stuff.

Blizz have only started advertising for lead type folks for a "Next-Gen MMO" on their website in the last few weeks, no way are they announcing a new MMO:

One, this early in WoWs life cycle, when it's at the highest point of popularity yet, so soon after a major expansion.

Two, this early in the next MMOs life cycle.

Blizz never announces stuff until they are well under way and have actual product to show.

They might confirm that they are working on a new MMO, but the actual product announcement will be something much closer to completion, based on the location of the announcment and that Blizz managers comments at the BC launch ( about it being nearly ten years since SC, an odd thing to say at another products launch) it seems highly likely that it will be Star Craft related, but for reasons already mentioned, not an MMO, so that leaves...

StarCraft 2.

I'm with you Martin, I would think that is a better assumption than a Starcraft MMO.

Was StarCraft 2 really so hard to build..
I Fxcking Hate Blizzard.. I hated them for WoW, and I hate them even more for this..

Making an RTS isn't easy and we can tell for some of the RTS's after SC were horrible and unbalanced. Starcraft imo was one of the few most balanced games I've ever (and still am) played.

At the very least, it be cool to see the original Starcraft/BW redone using the Warcraft III graphic engine and another expansion pack to show what Kerrigan is really up to, what happened to Raynor, and the Protoss of course.

I know there was a project to redo Starcraft but I don't know if Bliz put their foot down on that one.

Sorry but what does MMO mean?

I'm guessing it means I'm not going to get my damned Starcraft 2.

Massively Multiplayer Online

I agree with most everyone here, Blizzard does not need another MMO right now.

What they better announce is Starcraft 2, or I will be a sad panda :(.

I really hope that it is SC2 and not another MMO. I don't see how another MMO can be as profitable as WOW without killing wow accounts.

I am very excited for this news.

A Starcraft MMO will have its time and place. I'm placing my bet (and hoping) it'll be Starcraft 2 RTS.

Worst case scenario is they announce Starcraft: Ghost going gold /sarcasm

while my mind is racing about what kind of things you could do in a MMO StarCraft. My mind also thinks whats stopping them from putting Starcraft on hold one more time and going Diablo MMO

StarCraft/Brood War really needs and ending or something that seems like and ending

From what Ive been reading so far, a lot of people seem to connect "MMO" with "MMORPG." Imagine if SC2 was an MMORTS

Before anyone shoots down the thought of that, think of the possibilities. Its mind boggling :D

ZOMG zergling rush times infinity.

Ahhh! No amount of reavers in hell would stop that...

I can just imagine it now..

30 VS 30 ISLANDS FFA MONEY!@!!*****

I would truely hate to see another MMO.. theres not an RTS out that captured me like warcraft 3/ frozen throne. Now that those games feel heavily outdated (after playing a few years), It would be useless to throw out another MMO while WoW is taking over. No one going to play both WoW and a starcraft MMO. It's one or the other, to have both is pointless.

More dreaming than anything else, but how about a Starcraft RTS-based MMO? I don't believe anything like it has quite been done, but it would (hopefully) passify the fans waiting for SC2, while bringing in monthly revenue while not neccesarily killing off WoW. . .

i'm with u guys in hoping its SC2 RTS and not another MMO. although i understand that MMO's have their place and i can respect that. but i think we;d all agree that MMO's aren't for everyone by far. personally, i don't have the time to spend on one and the monthly fee would go to waste. i need a game i can go through slowly and not worry about a stupid fee.

i tend to get finicky with games and come back to them later. i still havn't beaten morrowind, forget oblivion!

I personally would like to see Starcraft 2 in RTS and MMORTS, the previous being the preference.

Agreed. While the last battle appeared to be a 'finale', it really wasn't. There were a lot of holes left open. I wonder if they intentionally did it that way to implement a 4th race?

I've had this idea before, yet when I thought of it, hardware limitations always hindered the thought. But yes, an MMORTS, how would that work? This is my take on it:

The Galaxy
The world would be a galaxy. When you first join the game (at signup and whatever) you choose a race, and a location base. Factions, clans, "guilds" (or whatever you want to call them) can have different bases and stations. The goal of this MMORTS would be expansion and eventual domination.

Gameplay
How would this work? After setting up an account, joining a race, then a faction, you will have a "patch" of land that is yours. Initially, self-competition between factions will be prominent. Battling members of your own Faction to gain rank and whatnot. When a certain rank is reached, you can the move to a colony, on another world in the same or another galaxy. Essentially, you would be setting up camp, preparing for war. Imagine a Risk-like situation, where people duke it out for land, and domination.

Ideas that can be implemented here would range from team strategy to terrain advantages. Battles depending on the importance, set by members of the faction, can receive more resources than others. Example: If a Faction wants to take over World A, yet they have a battle on World B as well, a "high ranked player" can put a Bill into action, that will ask members of the faction if they want to allocate resources in a 60/40% manner for Worlds A/B. If passed, the TOTAL number of gas, crystals, etc will be allocated accordingly, or if not the total amount, the resources gained by battles in A and B will be split according to the allocation ratio.

Conclusion
I don't know if a game like this has ever been made, but I've thought about this for a while. I don't know how to make games (aside from the editor in starcraft), so if there's anyone out there reading, go ahead and take this as a foundation for a new game. And, if asked, I can elaborate more on it. I really hope a MMORTS or MMOFPS comes out sometime soon. Games that integrate more than just "blind individual skill" are the future in my opinion. A game like Starcraft, with it's financial micro-management, geographical strategy, and general diplomacy, would be amazing to turn into a MMORPG/RTS cross-over genre.

There are some really good MMO turn or tick based strategy games out there. Personally, Planetarion comes to mind for me. Something like that brought to real-time would be amazingly fun.

just got back from korea, a buddy of mine there works for blizzard marketing korea, he told me it is sc II. cheers

Yeah, if this was true then you can welcome your buddy to the unemployment line and potentially a massive lawsuit.

actually not really, im not an employee of blizzard, i cant be sued for diclosing information that was divulged to me nor are there any laws that can force the diclosure of my source which at this point is anonymous. What ive said cannot be categorized as libel of any sort since i am not stating this as a fact nor do i portray myself as an employee of blizzard or stated in any way shape or form that i am affiliated with blizzard.

with regards to my comment, it can be treated as heresay. and since i am in united states, international law and/or korea laws cant apply and as far as i know in america, no company or even the government can force me the disclosure of a source if no laws have been violated and it is not a threat to national security.

ive rambled for too long forgive me, but my point was, my buddy wont be facing unemployment or lawsuits of any kind. =p

i dont know about u guys but im excited! starcraft is the greatest rts period!
