Every MMORPG player collectively agreed to never speak of the SWG failure ever again.

sad, but true. star wars galaxies could have been great, but sony got lazy and banked on the star wars name to sell it, so a goldmine magically turned into a steaming TURD. all of the collective game developers should have learned from this atrocity.

rofl - So true...

And I have no idea if any MMORPGs are coming out with the Star Wars theme.

Half the battle, hell probably three quarters of the battle, is already won by making a MMORPG based in the Star Wars universe ... and yet it still managed to become F.U.B.A.R.

A lot of people have made reference to Sony as a whole being and extremely arrogant company...this is a prime example. I loved SWG, but the big morons got jealous of WoW popu;arity and tried to get 'new' players and just more or less drove out the loyal fans. Well, now they have neither!

Last night I decided to check out the SWG forums after several months being 'free' of SOE. It doesn't seem to me much improvement has been made since they pounced the 'New Game Enhancements' on everyone. Calls of server conslidation, content and rollback are still there, though there appears to be somewhat less traffic then when I left. Its sad to the nth degree. Now they're trying to incorporate specialization like in WoW. Its a pathetic blatant attempt to clone something successful that is clearly, even after a year, broken and has no hope of 'getting there'. One has to wonder if this is the helpdesk job one has to cut their teeth with to get anywhere in SOE. Seems to be a lot of personel turnover too.

Lucas Arts definitely needs to be purged. Their latest offerings leave much to be desired. Its definitely a far cry since Lucas Arts employed their own development team, churning out such classics as tie fighter, grim fandango, sam and max, dark forces and jedi knight series. Now its all 'me too' with Star Wars! Cloning anything thet becomes marginally popular. Who new that they would take 'clone wars' as a motto! :(

I really liked the skill tree system in SWG when I played 2 1/2 years ago. Sure, there were some balance issues and whatnot but when they did the whole "combat balance" it completely changed the game. They have completely changed the game several times, come to think of it. Why the hell couldn't they just fix the things that blatantly didn't work, or add more content?

Somehow, they managed to take the potential goldmine that is the star wars universe, pack it into a spaceship and send it straight to the sun.

I really wonder how some of the people making decisions for that department got their jobs.

Ummm...last I checked, many of the better LucasArts games were NOT by 'their own development team'.

I heard alot of good and bad things about swg. What threw me off of it is the monthly fee. So I never bothered. But if they were to incorporate just the technology, Force, and various other things...like make it without the story line of the movies Id totally be in it. And if there was a way to move up the ladder to be a captain or admiral of a star destroyer....

I really miss swg from back in the day...i think it was even more addicting then wow is now

I just stumbled on this thread. I think they really missed the boat by setting SWG in the classic timeline. If they did it in a time outside of the movies, like KOTOR, I think it would have been alot more interesting.
My line of thought was this, what is the most popular character in star wars....a jedi right? So why not just set the game in a period of the star wars universe where everyone can be a jedi. Have light and dark side (like alliance and horde). It would work perfectly in the star wars universe, you could have massive sith on jedi battles etc. And this would have been years before WOW. But thats just my thinking...

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that a new Star Wars MMORPG was in the works based on the KOTOR universe (can't remember the developer).

Also there is the SWG emu which has come pretty far since it was announced a few months back (swgemu.com). It's based soley on the pre-CU game.
