What's the deal with SWG these days? Is it still populated? Are they still releasing updates? I was loading LOTRO on my new build and saw my Galaxies discs and kind of wondered what happened to that game. I know I haven't seen any expansions in the stores for at least 2 years.

I use to play when it first came out, only because it was a Star Wars MMO, but wasn't really crazy about it. I did the trial not to long ago, and it still sucks. From reading the official forums, it appears to be dying a slow, dragged out death.

BioWare FTW.

It is a completely different (shittier) game than it was back when it first came out. If you don't remember anything of how great it used to be pre-cu, you might like it. There was a post about it a few days ago.

I actually think it is better now for the most part. Still blows though. One of the worst games I've ever played. Right there with SOF3.

SOE really blew it, what a fun complex game it used to be... really enjoyed my stint as a jedi (pre-cu), but even before that it was a lot of fun... eyeshot FTW!

The beta was fantastic. Buggy, sure, but you didn't have a set plan. You could pick and choose. Then they nerfed the game and made everyone the same.

The premise really intrigues me. Knights of the Old Republic got me really yearning for a Star Wars MMO. Good job Sony for ruining it.

A KotOR MMO would be amazing (if done right).

I miss the environmentals in that game, particularly the deserts on Tatooine. You'd be standing in front of the spaceport in Bestine and then the wind would pick up, banners would start flapping, it would intensify and then a sandstorm would hit, wind roaring, shit flying through the air, sky gone brown. That was a great effect, especially if you were off in a little camp somewhere prospecting.

The original SWG deserved to develop into something great but player cities emptied out the NPC main towns, and then JTL emptied out all the cities altogether. And the "upgrades"... well they emptied out the whole damn game!

It was nice working through skill trees instead of dealing with levels. Probably the most fun was with my craftsman who could do a little entertainment on the side as well as wield a wicked laser pistol for self-protection. I miss my fez wearing mon calamari.

I miss getting buffed before a base war and planning our strategy for attack. I miss buying my new krayt weapon. I miss fending off bounty hunters 5 at a time, great times.. spent 3 years in that game and doubt I will ever find another as deep and fun, I'm hoping AoC at least comes close.

A Star Wars MMO that didn't have any type of space combat or space ship ownership/operation from the start is total shit.

LucasArts is the one to blame for the complete raping of SWG. They took away the sandbox MMO because it was "too complicated" and thus, the NGE came about. It's certainly a different game but not like the pre-CU. If they went back to a classless, skill tier system, then it'd be pretty damn good.

Those days are long past us though and the only hope for a better Star Wars MMO is BioWare.

You KNOW BioWare's MMO won't be half as complex as SWG used to be. They have to appeal to the cookie-cutter WoW audience if they want to compete with em.

BioWare has never known to be cookie-cutter and develop simple games. All of their RPGs have a certain level of complexity. Their unannounced MMO, whatever it might be (I actually hope it's a Mass Effect MMO over KoTOR) will most likely follow the same trend.

This may or may not violate forum rules, I don't know, so mods please delete it and be gentle on me if so, as I'm not trying to be a rabble rouser...

That said, anybody who was a fan of SWG in it's heyday might want to google SWGemu and take a look at what they've got running. It's a community developed, reverse engineered version of the game up to the point right before they launched the first game revamping Combat Upgrade.

They've worked on it for 2 years and then finally asked the community for help, which launched them to about 95% completion in around 2 months. The game is basically complete and they have a test server up from time to time that you can muck about in.

Last I checked they were dropping Ancient Krayt dragons on Anchorhead for shites and grins. That was pretty cool, and brought back old fun memories.

I loved SWG, until the Lucasarts changeover occurred. My entire guild and playing group disappeared in the span of a week.
