It looks as though Star Citizen has passed the $110 million mark. No new news besides that milestone though. Thanks to Blue's News for the update.

The site long ago stopped listing further stretch goals for this space exploration and combat game, so it's not stated if any additional features or content are being added with the $45 million dollars raised since passing their last stated goal.

Supposedly it's going to finally come out by the end of the year, but we've all heard that one before.

I tried the free play week they had a while back. Completely broken and unplayable. If their goal was to show off and/or get me to back the project they failed entirely.

It will be interesting to see what the final product looks like. They are the only crowd funded software project to make it into the AAA funding level (100 Million+ budgets aren't impossible for AAA projects, and there have been some that exceed 200 million). However, the previous publisher funded projects had a lot of accounting oversight that is missing from this project. I hope that CR will be able to prove the naysayers wrong by launching a project worthy of this budget and that meets his consumer's requirements. But I will definitely wait to see.

While some of the videos I've seen look unique and intriguing, I just can't see giving money for something unfinished. I truly hope this succeeds, but they have a ways to go. And what I've read, they have already spent all of the money they have. If they don't somehow keep getting money, I hope they can still manage to finish it.

Its free to fly all ships until March 20th right now. Maybe you'll change your mind about playability, its free to find out.

They haven't nearly spent all the money they've raised, that's a Derek Smart - originated lie. They have enough money right now to finish the game, so no one should feel like they need to contribute more or game is doomed or anything. If you're smart, you merely buy a starter package now and earn your way in the universe. Or buy it later, it'll be more expensive later, of course, due to time value of money considerations, but its a fair hedge against the supposed uncertainly. Anyways, the game is getting made even if they don't make it to 110M and 1c. The money they get beyond what they have assures of being able to keep the servers up longer and with higher quality at release, hopefully avoiding the scaling problems every popular MMO has at release.

By the time backers discover their money has been blown on coke and hookers we'll be on to the next game anyway.

Yes keep building up that mountain... it will burn oh so much more beautifully. *MANIACAL LAUGHTER*

Hey, at least Robert's wife can finally add something other than 'actress' on her resume!

- Actress

- Director of HR and Marketing

Currently downloading the 27.5 GB needed for the free play til the 22nd. I have seen some YT videos of this game and not really impressed outside of what the ships look like.

The game industry ran him out years back... so he started making movies with questionable money, and finally that industry decided it wasn't even worth the tax write offs with him at the head any longer... so he tried to come back tot he game industry, no dice he was still laughed at. So he found kickstarter... and I remember his first sales pitch was, donate me some money and I have these investors lined up just waiting to see that this game is viable. When YOU show them they will swoop in and finish this thing AAA style. I guess those investors either backed off or where imaginary... either way if people with money to invest in cash losing tax schemes won't even touch him. Even if this game comes out... it will be a 10mil game as 90% of the funds anyone has ever given this guy evaporates. He almost bankrupted the WC guys, and he sold his vaopr ware company to MS who finished StarLancer. (ok kudus to him on that one lol)

The funny thing is, I'm sure Smart's attacks motivated a lot of the rabid SC fans to plough even more money into the game, just to prove him wrong. They should be thanking him. And I'm sure at this point it's mostly the same 'whales' throwing more and more money at it, rather than new sign ups. Just check out the monster thread here which, in the long stretches of time between any meaningful updates on the game, is about 99% 'which ship shall I buy/melt/CCU today', stream of consciousness hangar meta-game commentary, provided by about half a dozen concierge-level would-be players.

I was informed when I signed up over a year ago to not expect any real fully playable content until 2017 but smaller installments would come out earlier. So I dropped the $275 coin for a constellation package, have enjoyed the communication, beta testing and watching the development. My hope is that this turns out to be a great game and willing to support it. If this becomes a total loss I will be disappointed yes but l have lost more on lame stock market picks and bad dates. I feel that I invested more than I normally would on a game but I am especially interested in this, those that are dropping thousands though. mind blown.

Part 1A will be released at the end of the year
Part 1B and 2A will be released in Q2 of 2017
Part 2B and 3A along with the first third of Part 4A will be released in Q3 of 2067

2067? That sounds about right. Hopefully I'll still be alive! I'll be in my 80s.

Maybe we'll have decent holodecks by then.

What leads anyone to believe they could finish the game with the amount of money they have right now? The majority of the major game mechanics aren't presentable yet. No timeline has been displayed so RSI would be accountable with the backer's money and hitting deadlines. Every software and hardware project I've worked on for 15 years has had milestone dates for all major features leading to a release. If RSI plans to release anything by the end of the year, it should already be planned out. They are $110 mil into Star Citizen with nothing but promises right now.

They haven't spent that much of it yet? Simple really. And they have announced timelines, Squadron 42 by year's end, final game the following year. Star Marine some time before Squadron 42. Just because you don't follow the development of the game closely doesn't mean that plans don't exist. Just because Derek Smart said so doesn't mean they're actually anywhere close to out of money. They've said multiple times they don't need more funding to finish the game. They said it every time they release a new ship. They sell new ships primarily because they community demands it, not because of any need to fundraise.

Think about it, if they actually needed funds, they could get it, easily. They've had remarkable restraint. They could be selling ships that won't be ready until after the game is ready. They could be selling the super-carriers of the game instead of making them un-buyable. They could be selling the base game for same price normal games go for. And I could go on, but I'll list one more thing they could do: They could line up private investors or bank loans to raise whatever cash they need. And they'd certainly get it, easily.

That they aren't doing any of this is all the evidence anyone of sound mind needs to know they're aren't even close to out of money.

Keep throwing money on that bonfire everyone, I'll buy the game for $20 on a Steam sale shortly after release :)
but you wont have ship insurance! you missed out on that in 2015 (maybe 2014?).

but you can still pre-order something now that is not going to be available on release.... uh... an exclusive... paintjob! yes a paintjob!

Game crashes like crazy when you jump into the cockpit of the ships. The hud becomes bugged and then crashes after it locks up. The controls are a bit horrible also. Those poor donators got a x-rebirth clone but this you can fly a different ship, just as long as the game stays stable. One of the worst alphas I have ever tried next to x-rebirth. The game lags like crazy also. They should of waited til the game was in beta to have a free week. 110 millions dollars and I think everyone that gave money to RSI is getting screwed over.

First: why you wonder about all this , is a free game, based on donations. Second: we can just hope that the donations will be well handled to eliminate all bugs

Um, what? This isn't a free game at all. And those weren't 'donations'. They were people buying the game AND paying for different head-start ships.

This is absolutely not how you track software projects successfully. Projects need to be broken down into components and tracked against commitments, then you check every two weeks or a month to verify those milestones are being hit and the project is progressing. RSI is doing this internally and then not making any of the information available to the people financing the project. The previous leaks even showed what tools they were using to track projects. Given that RSI has $110 of people's money and has missed damn near every expected feature launch data, I think people should get a peek under the curtain.

In the loosest sense of the word. Much the same way I 'donate' to my grocery store for that bottle of Jack Daniels.

No this is more like you give unfinished grocery store $20 for a bottle of Jack Daniels by the end of the 2016 or maybe 2017. And you aren't 100% certain the store will open, so you decide to give them another $100 for five more bottles to make sure you get that first bottle.

It always cracks me up the only ones bringing up Derek Smart are the white knights of star citizen complaining that everyone is influenced by him. I had never even heard of Derek Smart before those same people brought him up. Ironic.

First things first: and I am not a SC backer, player, et al. I tried it a loonnngggg time ago when my friend had tossed CR some money for access. My direct information about the game is over a year old. That's how long it's been, I don't even remember when I tried it. Mind you, my friend has a habit of backing stuff like this as he's also a backer of whatever Garriot was peddling. I'm a beta tester, not a backer lol.

I have been playing games a very long time (I'm old) and I do remember meeting Derek Smart, Chris Taylor, John Carmack, Roberta Williams, Richard Garriot, and others at various industry confs, usually dealing with hardware. We weren't friends, I don't think any of them would be able to pick me out of a crowd of two people. I can tell you that all of the, have their quirks (Taylor joking about midgets and porn is a classic) but most are pretty cool/polite.

One guy that wasn't was Smart. The man was intelligent, but to say boastful was minimizing. His ego was beyond Romero (Daikatana) in many ways. Condescending is also too polite if he decided he had an issue with you. Oh, and if you think CR promised the universe with SC, the original boasting had many people stoked about BC3K because it was so radically above, well, everything. Those of us who had been in the gaming community for a while held back the optimism. What he was promising didn't seem possible with that level hardware. I mean, he would've had to be (or had to have hired) a team of super geniuses who were able to do things other industry Titans weren't remotely capable. Still, time and again, interview after interview, he touted how great the game was coming along. Real soon, he said. When it (finally) came out, extremely late, disastrous for more than one publisher if I recall properly, it was universally panned. Smart went on the offensive himself, because it wasn't his fault the game didn't measure up to the hype.

Derek Smart is pretty much the king of the ego driven crap talkers, and that doesn't appear to have changed one iota. Heck, even after he quasi made good with BC3KAD I still wouldn't trust the guy as far as I can toss a kiloton of lead, because he still had to spout crap. He's like that kid in school who just doesn't know when to shut his mouth and stop digging that dang hole. Take it as you will, but as someone who remembers Smart's not so smart mouthy act when he has an axe to grind, anyone who remembers his line of crap will tear into the guy.

Okay, and? This isn't about Derek Smart. People's concern about Star Citizen can be justified solely on the grounds that Chris Roberts is heading it up, and if you know your gaming history you'll know he's not exactly great with deadlines. At all. One of my favorite games of all time, Freelancer, was one if his great ideas that almost never happened; someone else had to come in and actually ship the dang game.

Please stop bringing up Derek Smart whenever anyone talks about Star Citizen. Like, at all. No one cares.

I'm an original kickstarter backer of the game, and I haven't even tried any of the alphas and modules ever. I want a finished game, and not to ruin my appetite with unfinished and unpolished crap. I already forgotten the 150 I spent on the game. And if it never gets released at least I got 2 t-shirts out of the deal, that I still wear today. Funny thing is that those probably wear out before the game comes out.

And when it gets released it will feel like I'm getting it for free, I paid so long ago for it.

That's an....excellent feature?

"Star Citizen; you paid for it sooooooooo long ago, it will feel like it's FREE! BUY IT NOW!"

That actually should be posted on their official page.

You misunderstand me. I'm not defending them. I've written down that money as a loss long ago. I just don't make it my goal to bitch about it in every topic related to SC.

I wasn't bitching, it was a legit business suggestion for their website.
