Hi all

I'm building a new computer really soon, and so far these are the parts I've come up with. I'm trying to cut costs on it, so if you all can suggest anything that's not absolutely necessary then that would be appreciated.

The computer will mostly be used for gaming and multitasking (ex. several browser windows open with outlook and maybe a p2p app in the background).

CPU: 2500+
MB: Abit NF7-S
VC: Asus ATI 9600XT
Ram: 1gig corsair PC-3200LL Twin-X memory
HDD: WD120JB
DVD-RW: LG Super CD/DVD Rewriter (GSA-4040B)

Thanks in advance.

I just have a couple of questions. First, there's almost no difference between a 9600Pro and a 9600XT right? (aside from the HL2 coupon).

Also, is better ram really worth it? I mean, I can get a gig of Kingston Value Ram (pc3200) fairly cheap, but do you think I should just spring for the Corsair?

9600 XT has faster clocked core (500/600 memory) over the Pro (I think 400/600). It also has a thermal diode on the core and supports the Ati overclocking feature in the new catalyst drivers. Other than that, not much difference (except yes, the HL2 voucher). Still same 128-bit memory interface.

Can't say much about the RAM, though if you're gonna run at stock clock and have no intentions of OCing, I'd go Crucial.

No, the XT core is 25% faster. 500MHz vs 400MHz. Also, at least one 9600XT solution I know of, the Gigabyte card, does not come with HL2. Besides that, your selections are solid but you may want to look into a LiteOn drive. My friend and I have had LG drives die on us.
