I'm sort of going overboard on these threads, but im getting so frustrated with overclocking.
I tried the guide at the top of the page (not putting a blame game on at all) and it sort of messed up my computer, so I'm just trying to get it back to a stable, but nice setting!
So, prior to my most recent attempt at overclocking, I was running at 400x8 with 1.4375 CPU volts, and disabled a few unnecassary things in bios as recommended by this webpage: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/2-c2d-overclocking-guide-beginners-p5k-add.html
Everything was fine, running at 3.2ghz maxing out at 40c (RARELY) per core.
Then I tried putting my ram timing to manual, and setting them to the actual ram defaults of the OCZ platinum... 4-4-4-15... I didn't think this would be an issue since this is actually how the ram was built. What a mistake... Didn't change any voltages or anything.
Also tried to get my processor to 3.6 ghz, at 1.6volts. Apparently this was a terrible mistake, since then I haven't been able to pass a prime95 test for more than a minute, and games frequently crash.
Here's the strange thing though... when I put the settings back to stock, I get no problems... Why is my old overclock no longer stable? I've tried upping the voltages to 1.45, and 1.46...
Any tips?

With my current rig, anyone have a general layout I could use for voltages, and settings? or know of a good website?
I just want my computer to run to its potential :(
 
You have no one to blame but yourself for messing with things when you're not sure of what you're doing.


The computer's potential is stamped right on the processor and memory. If those components had passed more high-speed testing, they would have been marked for the higher speeds.

You're pushing things farther than they're designed to go, and you're wondering why they don't work quite right? In addition, it appears you're just haphazardly changing settings rather than taking a systematic approach to the whole deal.
 
I don't know the answer to your problem, but I'd say that 1.6 volts is a really, really high Vcore for a C2D chip. I'd be cautious about the 1.45 and 1.46 but 1.6 is pretty much suicide. I wouldn't think the 1.6 would cause permanent damage, but it is possible that it did.

I think the 4-4-4-15 ram timings is what was screwing with it.
I manually set it to 5-5-5-15 and im passing the tests now...
I'm sort of curious why OCZ platinum ram is made for 4-4-4-15, but cant even perform at those timings? Ugh.
The processor is fine as well, I'm gonna bump it back down to 1.4375.
Any suggestions for settings in the bios? What to disable, what's useless? Any voltage settings? What I should leave enabled?
I disabled the wireless internet, and another ethernet card, figuring it would just take up resources... Left Realtek going. Is this the better of the two?
USB Legacy support, what does it do??

All the ram i've used with 4-4-4 timings have needed at least 1.9 - 2.0 volts to be stable. What is the recommended voltage for that ram at those timings?

Mine runs at 1.8 in Bios.. box says it should be 2.2.. everything is stable so I don't touch mine..

I had it at 2.0 for 5-5-5-15 and all is stable.
Shall I try it at 4-4-4-15 at 2.0?
 
What is the current MHz of the memory, and what is the "stock" MHz? The rated timings are for a certain speed. You exceed that speed, and you probably won't be able to run the rated timings.

You talking about the d9 chips in your crucial ram? I am talking about my g-skill, transcend and ocz that aren't d9 chips. The transcend will run with 1.8 volts until overclocking them the g-skill and ocz I have had wouldn't even boot at 1.8 and failed memtest at 1.9
I would check out 2.0 and see if it passes some memtest.
 
I haven't touched the ram mhz... So it's 6400 (400x2 for double duty?)
I finally got it stable at 4-4-4-15 @ 2.0 volts and 400x8 3.2ghz @ 1.45 volts.
How do I adjust the mhz of the ram? and is it worth it?
 
You would be overclocking your cpu too for now be happy where you are and take some time to read about overclocking. Even some of the old guides to overclocking still apply to todays systems.
 
You also might need to up the northbridge voltage - since that controls the interface between the CPU and RAM, and is now overclocked to 400 as well, it could be the source of some of your errors.
