Stable everywhere except Prime95, screw it?

I can run 3DMark 2001 and it wont crash, 3DMark 2003 and it wont crash, played Doom3 for about an hour with no problems, I can run the rthdribl program for about 30 minutes with no problems... if I try to loop 3DMark01 or run Prime95 they crash or stop running... but most everything seems to run with no problems, it really annoys the hell out of me but if everything else is ok do you think it matters?

Try Unreal Tourney 2k4... if it doesn't crash on SP or MP... then screw your Prime

If the machine does everything that you want to use it for, then count your blessings. Why torture test a rig that runs right? I have eight computers that work, and not one of them has ever had a need for me to run Prime95. Maybe there's something about your rig that Prime95 doesn't like, but that doesn't mean your machine is defective in some way.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...so fuhgeddaboudit!

If you cant loop 3dmark01 then there is a problem.


Also, in like 99% of the cases that prim95 fails your cpu can not do math. So, if it is failing prime95 please do not use any distributed clients like folding@home because you will return bad work results.

if your system is failing prime95, its not stable...simple as that. if you choose to use your system reguardless of that, thats your choice. i personally run prime95 for 24 hours on every system i build to see if its stable. also a few hundred runs of memtest86 to test if the ram is good.

I could run everything but Prime95 at 3.6Ghz too. To get Prime95 stable I need to back down to like 3.45Ghz

Which is what I decided to run at for safety purposes. (plus it warmed up with summer)

doom3 isnt a very cpu intensive game, its more dependant on the gpu. its been shown that theres very little increase in performance goin from a 2.4 to a 3.2ghz cpu.

theres different degrees of stability. those systems that use liquid nitrogen to cool p4's to 5+ ghz are not prime stable, about the only thing they are good for is benchmarking. if they can complete a single run of 3dmarks its considered benchmark stable.

I never run Prime. If I can run 3DMark and all of my games run fine, I am happy.

That would take a few days... overkill...

Full passes of memtest take like 10-15 minutes a piece.

I would say 25 - 50 full passes of memtest is enough....and then mabye a few hundred passes of test # 5, which takes like 1 minute per pass.

At any rate, the way you test is your choice, but wow....

I'm in the same boat. I only get stable prime95 at 2GHz so I would say fudge prime and whoo hoo mad FPS un UT2k4. Although, electricity will be free when I move back into university apartments, so I may concider getting it stable enought to run prime again because I like so milk out that good free electricity.

I think I found the problem .... eventhough it is a bit strange

I had recently got one of the OCZ DDR Boosters and tried it out, I didnt like putting it in the 3rd slot as I lost Dual Channel so I tried putting it in slot 1 so I could keep Dual Channel... come to find out later on my RAM doesnt support higher voltages anyways... I kept the Booster in for the hell of it though. Previously before I had the Booster it was pretty stable in most things at 230FSB with low memory timings, even in Prime95. I finally got fed up with it being unstable at random situations and no matter what I tried... I thought it was either the Booster or the board doesnt like me using slot 2/3 for RAM. So I took out the Booster and put the memory back in slots 1/3 and its even stable at 235 now... strangely enough I never got it stable at 235 before... oh well... I'm happy.
