Hi all. I have an Saphire HD4870 card in my current system. I'm using Catalyst 12.1 as any time I've tried a newer driver/catalyst I get problems. I know AMD stopped releasing monthly driver updates for these older cards, and it's now every 3 months I believe, just to fix any compatability problems. A few days ago I tried the latest driver that supports this card, which failed a couple of hours later. Ever since its running like $h1t. I've rolled back my system to a couple of weeks ago before I messed with it, but no joy. When I boot system, at 1st attempt it gets so far then blue screens, saying it couldn't restet graphics driver. It then reboots again ok.
I'm building a new system, got everything but cpu and mobo as waiting for Haswell. I tried out the new gpu a couple of weeks ago, and it worked 100%, its a GTX690. After taking it back out and putting the 4870 back in, I installed latest driver and now have probs.
Has anyone got a 4870, and what driver do you find stable? I used driver sweeper and it cleaned all the Nvidia stuff off.
Rest of system is Q6600, Gigabyte DS3R P35 mobo, 4 GB Corsair RAM.
It's an old system, which is very slow nowadays, prob needs a complete re-install, but no point untill I get my new system up and running.

I have a Sapphire 4870 and an HiS 4870 and they don't like the new drivers either. Revert back to something like 11.1 or earlier and it should work fine.

It was working ok on 12.1 for some time, must have upset it when I took it out and it's throwing a wobbly now. Planning on selling it when I get new system, so gotta get it working ok.
 
Same here, 13.4 on my kid's 4870 without any issue to report.

I'm running 2x 4870x2 in Quad Crossfire in my secondary computer still, using the latest 13.1 drivers along with the latest CAP with no issues whatsoever. I've always had good results using the latest available drivers. Performance, given the age of the hardware, is still pretty damn good, even compared to newer hardware.

Make sure to install the latest CAPs also, they are critical, even for single-GPU configs.
 
The 4000 series really doesn't seem that old. I ran a 4870 with my E8400 for at least 2 years. Either I'm getting old or AMD is dropping support sooner than they should. Apparently 5 years is just too long to support.
 
Thanks for the replies. I've never installed the CAP's at all. Always just download the catalyst control suite which includes driver. I'll give your suggestions a go and see how I get on.

Legacy Driver does NOT mean they are no longer supported. There have already been several updates to the Legacy driver, not to mention the continued support via CAPs.

The only cards AMD has truely stopped supporting are their pre-DX9 cards. The newest driver for those cards is from 2006 and getting them working on anything newer than XP requires magic, lots of luck, or both. But AMD has had DX9 cards since 2002.
