Hi guys,

I've been out of the hardware game for quite a while, but I've recently been experiencing some instability in a few of my servers. What I'd like to do is replace the power supplies (I've basically determined that it's a power-related issue through a process or elimination) with newer models with a bit more power output.

What I'm looking for is a unit that's reasonably power-efficient and stable. Currently the machines these will be going in are running multiple VMs that I use for work, so stability is very much a key factor for me. (And since I'm paying for the power, efficiency is my 2nd criteria..) Once I've outgrown these machine I'd like to be able to plug a quad-core intel chip and three or four (possibly more) hard drives into them...

I'm hoping to be able to find something for under $150CAD. (I'll most likely end up buying from here if that helps anyone get an idea of costs...) However, since I'll be buying two units, cost is a bit more of a factor than I'd like it to be..

I'd like to know first of all whether this is a realistic expectation, or whether I need to raise the amount I'm willing to spend, or forego my hope of keeping them for a few years. (like I said earlier, it's been a while since I've looked at hardware so I don't really have a clear idea what's decent anymore).

Second to that, I'd love to hear recommendations based on the above criteria that anyone has. Right now my current shortlist consists of an Antec Truepower Trio 650W or an Antec
Neopower 650W.

I understand that it's important to get a decent brand-name power supply. I just don't have an idea of who the good brands are anymore. :)

All thoughts are welcome...
 
you sure you need a 650w power supply? saying you want efficiency but also 650w for each computer doesnt sound quite right...
 
those antecs are rebranded anyway. how about a top of the line fortron/sparkle or topower (who seem to be the oem for bfg's line of power supplies - the 650w i bought was anyway). got any relatives in america? best buy has some bfg/antec power supplies on clearance... even the 800w is $135.99 around here (but ebayers immediately bought them all).

Efficiency is simply because I plan on having the units for hopefully four or five years. I'd rather back an extra $20-30 for a more efficient unit now than an extra $10/yr over the course of their lifetime.

The 650W is for the quad-core and four drives that mentioned I plan to eventually power with the units.
 
The Hiper series are worth looking at as the newer models are 85% efficient and they dont cost a lot.
I have the 630W and while it raises the case temps a bit, it is an excellent PSU and I still get big overclocks with slower silent case fans.
(E8400 @ 4.13GHz - will go a lot higher, 8800GT at 120% clock)

So is Antec still a fairly decent brand? I've heard conflicting opinions...

In the 650w range there are no real good currently made FSP's or Topowers.
