Hi All,
So yes I was one of those who bought the 805d just recently as an upgrade to my Athlon 3000---and I got it to OC to 4.0ghz or so. I've always considered myself a decent, but faithful, oc'er but not a pro by any means--though, I've been doing it forever.
In any event, I thought I'd get some feedback on what I've done so far from those who do know more than I, since I haven't done any oc'ing in maybe 4-5 years. I do have some questions.
My Setup
Mobo: ASUS p5nd2-SLI
Ram: DDR667 PQI 1gb X2 (total 2gb) 4 4 4 12 2.0v
Power Supply: Aspire 520watt
Cooling: Kingwin liquid cooler, cooling GPU and CPU
HD: 2 hitchach 160g's RAID 0 SATA
CPU: Pentium 805d 2.66ghz @ 4.00ghz
Video: Radeon x1800xt Sapphire
Voltages:
CPU: 1.49
RAM: 1.95
IDLE Temp: 50c
100% CPU Temp: 66-68 (crashes at 69-70)
Room Temperature Recently: Around 90 (so its hot in here)
So my current project is stabilizing it at 4.0, which I may have done. It really took a long time to fiddle with everything to get it right--the turning point was removing the CPU throttling; it seemed that it almost always crashed with that on. I've been running my system at 4.0ghz for a couple days now---I've run a bunch of 3d programs and prime 95 for a couple hours and I've had no crashes so far, though what I'm concerned about right now is that I'm borderline crash temperature. I have a couple specific questions, or concerns maybe someo of you in the know could help with, I'll make a list!
1. PQI says ram voltage is 2.0. In the bios it defaulted to 1.9; I didn't realize this--and even now at with ram at 700mhz its at 1.95; not 2.0. Do you think this contributed to instability of the system if it was rated at 667 @ 2.0? and I was doing 667@1.9? Should I set it to 2.0 even if it seems perfectly fine right as it is? Also, if it can run at 667@1.9, does that infer some decent overclockability potential?
2. The internal thermal throttler, once removed, stabilized my system. I'm a little worried about damaging the CPU and I've gotten several warnings. It, though it never gets above 68c and right now its 50c. Should I try to work WITH the CPU throttling or just disable it?
3. My CPU core voltage is 1.46@ 4.0ghz. I notice this is substantially lower than every 805d@4ghz. Toms needed to set to 1.55 and some others to 1.62 to get their 4.0ghz. In the Toms article, he mentions those with lower stock voltage have higher OC potential. and I noticed my stock voltage was a good deal lower than the CPU most people had. Am I reading this right that I have some excellent OC beyond where I am now?
4. In order to install the Liquid cooler on my GPU I needed to remove the heatsink from the memory chips on the video card, it is air cooled at the moment with no heatsink; unsafe? safe?
I think thats it.
I guess my questions most recently have revolved around what were the causes of my instability at 3.6-4.0. At first I couldn't get stable in windows for more than 30 seconds at 4.0ghz, I'm wondering if my memory was the cause of all this--because I was running it at max bandwidth 667, yet not at the voltage I was supposed to.
Anyway! I think thats it, if anyone has any further advice--I'm going to try and push it some more, but I'd appreciate any feedback on what I've asked
cheers!
