Normally if I start having issues like what I'm having now I would just say "oh well upgrade time." However, I'm on a limited budget (unemployed, and that runs out soon.) So I'm just asking some questions here to limit the financial damage.

Here is the system:
C2Q E8300 @ 2.7G
4GB ram (don't recall brand)
Radeon 4890 1GB
Gigabyte P31-S3G Mobo
WD 1TB Black
650W Cooler Master PSU

This is what is happening. Sometimes when I launch a game or am Folding a SMP unit the computer just shuts off. Like a hard power down. I have gone into the BIOS and selected all the most stable settings and set all the components to default voltages. The processor is barely overclocked I doubt that is the issue. This system has been rock solid in this configuration for the last 2 years, and the processor was overclocked to much higher.

I am inclined to say that this is a PSU problem for two reasons. One it wasn't the best PSU in the first place. Two the PSU is over 4 years old making it the oldest component in the case. However, I have had simular issues with bad motherboards as well. I have a bunch of stuff to read voltages, and temps. But I'm just not sure how accurate they are, I mean they are only as accurate as the ICs on the mobo that read the voltage and temp. Unless someone with more exp tells me otherwise.

Anyway here is what SpeedFan says my vitals are:
Core temps @25% load: 40C, 37C, 32C, 34C
+3.3: 3.34V
+5: 5V
+12: 12.10V
-12: -16.72V
-5: 6.85V
Vbat: 3.25V

If there are any diagnostics I should run please let me know.

If the problem persists and no one can help I will be dropping $100 for a new PSU today (so lame I was saving up for a new graphics adapter.)
 
Your -5 and -12 seem to be WAY out of spec but otherwise those voltages look ok.

Does the PSU fan seem to be operating correctly? does the outside of the PSU case get hot to the touch? I'm wondering if it could be a problem with the PSU cooling causing the system to shut off. If it is then fixing it could be as simple as putting a new fan in the PSU.
 
Just replace the PSU. It still would have been a bad idea on your part to continue using that PSU with a new GPU.

Also, if you want accurate PSU voltage readings, you need to use a Digital Multimeter. Those software readers do not provide any sort of accurate PSU voltage readings.

Air is venting out of the back of the PSU, it dosn't even feel warm to the touch.

I'm going to check a local shop first. There is a pretty good small shop here that is not much more expensive than Newegg. If they don't have a brand that I'm looking for like Corsair, Antec, ect then I will put in an order to NewEgg.
 
I got a 750 W Corsair from a small local vendor. Little more than I wanted to spend but they were out of 650W and everything they had in 600W and 550W was junk.

Got the machine folding right now, fired up WoW and had no issues. Next reboot I will have to turn the FSB up and let the heat rise. But I think the issue is squashed.
