I think we all see this drive on sale at a certain website, and I was wondering what is the general consensus on it? I have a ST6000DX0000, what is the difference between these two drives?
I'm really tempted to get 7 of these to complement my single 6tb and replace the 3tb drives in my media server I use maybe twice a week. I know I don't need NAS or enterprise rated drives for that application, but I still don't want to buy drives that consistently die after 2 years or something.


Your thoughts?
 
Not much data currently for SMR base drives other than terrible performance.

Excellent $/Tb though.

You know it is smr? I thought only the archive series was smr. The 6tb version there is ST6000AS0012
 
I googled the part # you listed and it came up as an SMR. I could be wrong.

edit: Read the data sheet from Seagate and it doesn't mention it being SMR so I doubt it actually is, sorry.

Still its pretty early to get a read on 6TB's reliability, they released about 18 months ago I think.

I doubt anyone here has thousands of those drives and anecdotes about failures are worthless.
