SSD without trim support - under-partition?

Hello,

I am wanting to use an SSD on a system without trim support. Can I get a similar effect to trim by significantly under-partitioning the drive? Say, for a 64GB drive, only partition 40GB?

I would think this would ensure the drive's controller always has plenty of space for garbage collection, etc, so even after a very long time, it will only see at most that 40GB as "data that needs to be saved" and can thus keep the drive fast and write multiplication down. Is this correct?

I would imagine some controllers are better than others at handling this - any recommendations?
