I have a 1 tb 7200rpm drive in my laptop and would like an ssd , either m.2 or just remove the 7200 and get a 2.5" ssd

its my understanding that if I wanted to clone my current os i would just need a usb to sata or m.2 enclosure and cloning software then after the clone i just swap the drives and it should be as it was with just new hardware, correct?

Yes, usb to sata enclosure if your laptop has only 1 2.5".

No need for an M2 enclosure. Just chuck in the M2 and clone, then change boot order to the M2 from the HDD.

It's worth noting that samsung drives come with a cloning tool. Other drives may not [this may have changed though]
