I have a 2012 MacBook Pro & the internal spindle drive is about ready to die. I can hear it and the drive health is reporting "poor" with the manufacturer tools. So obviously I am looking at SSD's but not sure if OS X (Mavericks) supports TRIM for SSD drives natively out the box or if I need to configure the OS to get the most optimal performance from an SSD.

Thanks for any info!

OS X only supports TRIM on OEM SSDs by default. There are a couple kernel module hacks out there that enable it for 3rd-party units, however some have reported issues with using them, YMMV (I suspect but can't prove that it caused issues on my system that led to a full wipe/reinstall).

The app "Trim Enabler" worked for me when I swapped the hard drive to a Sandisk SSD on my work 2012 MBP, and it's still on Mountain Lion.
