This is more a point of curiosity than concern but I would like to get clarified

With googles report on hard drive reliability we have a really good measure of hard drives AFR related to age, temp, ect

Obviously SSD are pretty new and we dont have anything like that yet for them
but have mtbf in the range of 1-2m hours
but so do some server grade hard drives that carnegie melons study found to be over exagerated by 15x

Ive seen a lot of accounts of SSD dying relatively early but its hard to tell if they stand out because its an irregularity or if its actually common
also they are often regarded as early entry to the market problems or firmware problems and not really as reliability issues

i would feel kind of confident saying that SSD will probably outlive a HDD
but im kind of curious by what factor

anyone have any thoughts or good articles on the issue

ssds are much more reliable than HDD in my experience. i have rma'd three caviar blacks, and two barricudas, in the past two years.
i have never rm'd a ssd. and i have twelve. the vast majority of SSD deaths are bad firmware flashes.
no moving parts, no heat generated (or such a low amount as to be non-issue) less chance for failure. shock tolerant jesus the list goes on.

I had to RMA my first Intel 80GB when the controller failed. Intels RMA process was impeccable though. I had it back and Windows reinstalled 7 days from the day I mailed it. (Friday to Friday.) I was very impressed.

This one has been fine so far.

I've returned several WDs HDDs over the years. At least they all failed within warranty.

Yes, but unless you like having an automated process writing endless amounts of micro sized files for fun, it shouldn't be an issue.

Around here a few months back, someone posted a site that had a huge write up showing that the average HDD would fail from other factors before it had as many writes as an SSD is built to provide.
 
I was wondering about the write fail rate myself. I mostly just do menial tasks, and play MW2.

Seems the SSD may a soon upcoming purchase.
 
SSD is the way of the future, nuff said. By the end of this year I predict $1/GB and lower prices on SSDs, and starting next year SSDs will be prominently featured in pre-built OEM products.

Don't hold your breath quite yet ...

We've seen many drives (admittedly, most are just rebrands of the same drive) come out, but the cost per GB has pretty much stayed constant or in some cases actually gone up (SandForce, Crucial RealSSD).

Anand has speculated that with Intel/Micron's introduction of 25nm nand in late 2010 is when prices will actually go down, but I'm betting that demand by then will still far outstrip supply (probably even more so than now) that prices will remain high or go higher for a long while afterwards.
 
I think I have about 10 SSD's around of various makes/ models/ sizes. I lost one OCZ Vertex 120GB due to a bad v1.5 firmware flash: http://www.servethehome.com/ocz-vertex-120gb-rma-raid-0-time/

Other than that, I still haven't had a problem. Realistically, they can survive a little "bump" while in operation much better than a mechanical disk. If you have ever seen a mechanical disk with a bad motor/ bearing fail in spectacular fashion, you may have seen one take out a neighbor in an adjacent hotswap bay.
 
all that's holding me back from ssd... well, a couple things. cost per gig and mb/s throughput for one. the other being sata3. hitting 450mb/s+ average is just spectacular, and at just over 200usd! (on hdds) - hard to go back to anything less.

anyway, i think i'll likely just get the first ssd i can that will fully saturate sata3 with at least 200gb capacity.

the cost for ssd failure of any kind is just too much, and that's without nearly as much capacity or bandwidth as i'd like. the beauty of it all is that by the time they aren't (likely in ~1 year), they'll have worked it out so SSD really is perfect as a consumer grade drive. and all the people that have them now will be tossing what they have currently for these much faster/better drives. and at a much nicer price point.

i have to say, though. the spectacular platter density increases are what kept me on hdd a bit longer. i'd have SSD right now if such were not the case

It depends how they fail. If write cycles are used up on the MLC/ SLC then you can still read off the drive(s). If you have a firmware event like I had, nope. If there was an on-drive component failure, maybe depending on what fails, but you are sending the drive to expensive data recovery folks at that point.
