hi everyone, not sure what SSD i should be thinking of buying...i've googled quite a few reviews on different drives but theres a hell of a lot out there! also heard some stories about the OCZ vertex 3 drives failing....and i'm just simply not as up to date on hardware as i was in the past.

so i'm looking for a SATA 3 120GB capacity drive. i don't need to get the fastest there is, but good speed for my money would be nice. i dont mind sacrificing a little speed to save a few dollars at the same time. good bang for the buck mostly.

i've heard good things about the crucial M400 drives, but price is usually higher
OCZ vertex 3 drives look really nice IF the reliability problems have been fixed
even the ADATA S510 drives don't look too bad for the price.
then there's kingston, mushkin, corsair, etc.

the trouble is trying to decide which drive to buy over another and why....

Crucial M4 is probably the most recommended atm.

Do a forum search for threads about it, there's tons of posts. ;)
 
I'd say the Crucial M4 or the Samsung 830 are the go-to drives right now. I'd stay away from OCZ drives - too many customer service issues to go along with the Sandforce issues. If you want a Sandforce drive, look at a Corsair Force GT.

I own both a SATA3 120GB Crucial C300 which is faster than the M4 in random read/writes and comparable in everything else and an SATA2 Intel 160GB SSD which is not known for speed but reliability. They are both in different systems.

Honestly, I prefer the Intel drive for capacity. I barely notice the speed difference at all. The Crucial cost me $220. The Intel drive was only $129 + BF3 free after rebate during Black Friday.

In the future, I will prioritize capacity over speed for my SSD decisions. Practically every SSD is light years ahead of mechanical drives and the difference boils down to maybe 1 or 2 seconds longer boot time between the highest end SSDs and the medium range ones.
 
I too, was very worried about making the "right" choice. It has been my experience, that all the major manufacturers (even Intel and Samsung) have had some problems, but they also seem to have addressed them very quickly. Make sure you are researching 'current' versions of the drive (including firmware that may have addressed earlier issues). This is a good time to stress the importance of a firmware upgrade at the time of install. It has also been my (limited) experience that motherboards that support 6GB speeds are a lot more impressive than those running 3GB. If yours does not support 6GB or at least 3GB transfer speeds, you might want to look at a mobo upgrade also (assuming the drive is capable of those speeds).

Cruicals M series
Intels 320 and 520(?) series
Samsung 830
Certain OCZ

seem to be the 'hot' drives atm.

I think they were (and are) one of the leaders, in both the R&D, and manufacturing of the raw components. Where Samsung seems to have fallen behind, was in getting the final product to the (U.S.) market, and in marketing. I also wonder if they held back to make sure they had everything 'right' to avoid recalls and such.

i finally bought my first SSD!! w00t!!

thanks for the advice, i ended up settling on the kingston hyperx 120gb. reviews really seemed to like it, it was on sale, and from what searching i did i found that much of the sandforce issues seem to have been fixed by recent firmware updates.

it was either between this one or the M4. deciding factors were that the M4 was a little more expensive, tad slower and the newer issue after so many hours of use that some have been discussing here. it was a hard choice....but i feel good that mainly you guys here steered me away from OCZ. i was a big OCZ fan in the past. had great experience with them and their support, but all i see is that its not so great anymore. oh well!

now to figure out how i should go about setting this thing up....and i have a total of 4 SATA ports. right now 2 dvd burners and 2 oldschool HDDs...so that means i have to pull one of my burners for now :p
