How much heat does a typical SSD put out?

How much energy do they need?

I have two 120's in raid 0. For my boot drive right now. Not enough space for my MMOs.

Would placing 2 SSD drives in a single drive bay cause overheating? Would 3?

Thankfully vibrations arnt and issue.

What kind of boost would I get for speeds? Should I do raid 0 for 4 drives? Or raid 5/6?

I understand both sides of the argument for and against doing raid 0 with or without ssd drives. Please understand that is not the direction of my question.

I have been very happy with the performence of my boot drive and simple logic would seem to say more is better.

If prices tank I suppose I could also look at picking up 2-4 240gb (ish) drives and leave the boot drive alone.

No. I currently have 3 (1 TB 850 pro + 2x 250 GB M4) stacked on top of each other on top of plastic cd case and they do not even get warm to touch.
 
Almost all SSDs are <5W, some are even sub-1W. Heat isn't really a consideration.

Keep in mind that SSDs operate like RAID0 devices internally, the NAND is essentially in parallel by the controller.Their largest speed advantage over traditional drives is Random Access, which going out with additional drives in RAID0 isn't going to help you too much, as they already have a lot of NAND in parallel to begin with -- and one reason why you see that drives with larger capacities can often out-perform smaller drives.

Apart from that though, RAID0 is your best bet for speed, if that's your only goal. Your just already on the end of the diminishing returns curve with SSDs to start with.

RAID0 is good for large sequential reads and writes (which should be a rare operation in most applications) but not always a benefit for random IO (which most applications benefit from).

Honestly, you'd be better off getting one big SSD than dealing with multiple small SSD's and then dealing with RAID. Unless of course you're forced into a situation where RAID is a must and small drives are all that's available.

As far as performance goes it'll be just like any typical RAID system with the performance increases, although unless you need it don't ever consider RAID SSD's for the sake of speed. Heat output and power usage is a joke and I would not be concerned stacking them on top of one another one bit.

As far as RAID0/5/6, it depends on your needs. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them. The only thing I could see being an issue is if you purchased all SSD's at the same time and RAID5/6'ed them they should "theoretically" wear out at the same time and prove to be useless where the only use is if you ever got lucky and had one completely fail for some unknown reason long before then.
