I currently have a pc with two 1tb western digital caviar black editions. I am running Windows 7 64bit professional on this pc. Like an idiot when i first built my pc I decided to go with regular SATA connections instead of using RAID. Today, after a couple of months with this pc, I decided to try RAID, I probably should have done some research because it seems that with Windows 7 switching to raid with out re-installing the os only = BSOD. From other research I did it seems that it is almost unfixable. So, while I am going to have to reinstall the OS, maybe now is the time to upgrade to an SSD.

I am a college student so funds are a little tight. I also play competitive in games, so keep that in mind while answering.

my set up:
Asus p6t mobo
core i7 920
6gb corsiar ram
evga nvidia geforce 880gts (heh)
2 WD caviar black 1tb.
1100w power supply

My main questions are:
1: Is an SSD worth my time?
2: Which SSD is worth my time? (price range100 - 200 but willing to spend up to 100 more if it means much better preformance)
3: As you can see I held off my upgrading my videocard waiting for the 400 series to come out (evga fan boy right here haha...). Seeing that the 480s ran hot, I was skeptical because I live upstairs in my house, and it can get real hot up here. I'd like to spend a max of 500 (or so) on a new video set up. So, which should I get SLI gtx2XX series or 1 gtx 480?

I live near by to a microcenter ( the one in longisland newyork) so that is an option if it is instock there. As well as amazon and newegg, although I would prefer microcenter.

MAX available currency is 800.
www,microcenter.com for those that don't know.

Thanks in advance.

SSD won't help much in gaming but it will improve your overall system performance. It's best to consider that your mechanical drives are the biggest bottle neck of data flow in your system, when you remove that bottle neck everything will seem smoother. If you can fork out the money I'd go with an Intel X25-m G2.

Thanks for the quick reply, that would be within the realms of possiblity, is there a more specific one i should be looking for?

oh i forgot one question on that post, is it stuipd to run RAID between the one SSD and my current sata HD?

i can probably answer that question, yes.

You answered your own question.

As for enabling RAID/AHCI after you've already installed Vista/Win7, all you need to do is change a single registry entry before rebooting in RAID/AHCI mode.

There are two models, 80GB and 160GB, in the X25-M G2 family. Which one you buy depends on your budget. :p

This. Google it and you'll find loads of info.

The SSD is totally worth it, it improves everything except game framerates.

The system boots much faster than any hard disk setup, and once you're in Windows, the load times are phenomenal. Small apps are instantaneous, and it's less than a second for nearly everything else but games. Another major benefit is that SSDs love being heavily loaded with fragmented requests - just try loading Outlook, Firefox and MS Office and your virus scanner at the same time on a hard drive - you'll be lucky if they finish in 30 seconds. On the SSD, it happens in just a few seconds.

Game load screen times are cut to a fraction of what they once were. For games that load textures/resources in real-time as you move through the game world, the SSD loads them butter-smooth.
