SSD Price Jump?

I was eyeballing a plextor 256GB on Sunday, it was $319 after rebate. This morning it is like $450 at the egg. I checked Amazon for the same drive, it was $349, tonight it's at $389.

I also copped an Agility 3 last week for 299 after rebate, this week it is like 355 after rebate.

What's with the volatility in the SSD market?
 
Flooding overseas is going to cause a shortage of hard drives...
They jumped in price +$50 today alone...
They are saying the hard drive shortage could last months...
This is just the beginning
 
Man I feel like I should hope on somethign quick then. I'm in need of a 2nd SSD. Don't have Sata III so $319 really made me want that 256GB Plextor. Was tempted at $349 too but I have a feelling there will be some sort of Black Friday deal.

Yes I know it's a better SSD but 319 for 256GB on the Plextor is what made me almost jump. That's a pretty good price. I just need to get off my 3 disk RAID0 that's 3 years old and I wouldn't even see the difference unless I upgraded my mobo to SATA III.
 
I don't think ssd's are affected by the flooding since most of them are made in china. Could be wrong though. (Retailers probably just gouging because they can)
 
If they keep'em low, i could see more people moving over to ssd...
But i bet they mirror the spinning market...
 
After using an SSD, I would have trouble going back. If they are smart about it, they could hook a lot more people if they bring their cost down a bit while the HDDs go up.

As far as I can tell on the pricegrabber link, SSDs are coming down a little right now.
 
well hell on wheels it's back to 389 now... Like they are just making the damn price up, lol.
 
Not sure why you see an SSD price jump...if anything there has been a minor slump. There have been a couple of 60GB synchronous/34nm SSDs near or under $100 lately; 128GB has been inching closer to $200.

Where did you read that WD is "basically shut down?" Perhaps 60% of their mechanical drives were made over in the affected factory, but that is nowhere near shut down.

He may have been referring to the fact that the partners they source their parts from are mostly shut down at this point. I read an article the other day that stated one company supplies around 80% of some necessary part or another and they're underwater currently.
