Well my bday is tomorrow and i'm trying to figure out what to buy myself.

My current specs are in my sig. I game @ 1920x1200 and don't plan on eyefinity any time soon.

I'm currently playing bfbc2 and mass effect 2.

So that being said, what would give me the most noticeable "boost" a SSD or 5870?
 
For gaming? 5870, for everything else? the ssd. So if you want gaming improvement get the 5870.
 
well the main reason i'm leaning towards 5870 is so i don't have to reinstall w7 lol
 
Well do you feel like your 4890 is holding you back in bfbc2? If you are content with your gameplay then go with the SSD.
 
5870, i didn't really notice much difference with the ssd...but that's just me =)

Difference in what? If you mean in usual system activities then I suspect you have done something wrong, if you mean gaming then yeah it won't be super ground breaking for fps.
 
what ssd are looking at?

i have a ssd, it's a major improvement. if u only have this opportunity, i would get the 5870, you can do a lot more with it. the ssd will make things faster but thats about it.
 
i haven't really looked much @ them, the idea just popped in my head to consider one. and probably in the neighborhood of 200-250 for an ssd
 
The SSD can improve your overall experience more than anything else can. However, only as it applies to everything BUT games. With regard to gaming performance the 5870 is the better choice.
 
Why not like a 5850 and a cheaper/smaller SSD as a boot drive? You can have the best of both worlds. The intel 40gb is like $120 or you can get a 60gb solid 2 for like $160.

The 5850 should easily handle BFBC2, ME2 and anything else you can play with ease. Plus, you can always add a 2nd one later when they're cheaper. :D
 
Get the SSD, you already experienced video cards, processors, ram, etc. Since you haven't owned an SSD yet, I would say try something new.

Hard choice, either way it's a good upgrade IMO. Also if you get the 5870, and sell the 4890, you should have enough from the sale for an intel 40GB SSD easily. Two birds, one stone

and i would need at least an 80gb drive to house my OS and installed programs/games and even that would be cutting it close. I'm @ 63Gb on my C: right now and thats only with 2 games installed (me2 & bfbc2) Once i install office and another game or two, i'm going to be knocking @ 80gb

Overall system performance...of course it replaced a pair of raid0 velociraptors...and there isn't a thing wrong with the setup. Once again...just my opinion.

My wife would yank my balls of if I dropped another $800+/- on another "little hunk of plastic" (her words) right now. But, it's in the works...
 
I would go a fast 120/160Gb SSD. The 4890 should be comfortable in the games you play until the 4series nVidia settle down.
 
lol i bought an xfx 5870 from another [H] member, i posted about it a few posts back guys :D
 
i'd go 5850 and raid0 some 500gb platter drives

4x of them gets you 500mb/s throughput on linear read/writes for at least the outer 4-500gb on a 4x 500gb 500GB platter array - that's like 200usd for 2tb (keep os and gaming on the first volume, only use the second for media) and massive throughput; random access is decent

i'm going ssd when 500gb and 500mb/s+ is a legit deal
 
Get another 4890 for crossfire AND get an SSD (perhaps a smaller one)

Best of both worlds, since 4890 crossfire performance will surpass that of the 5870 and you already said you're not interested in the main feature you would miss out on (eyefinity). The cost of a 4890 and a 60-80gb SSD should be comparable to that of a 5870.

You don't need to install all of your games on the SSD. Only install those with frequent loading times.

For example - Guild Wars, don't need on SSD, doesn't do me any good to load levels faster than everyone else. End up waiting anyway. Team Fortress 2 - ditto, what good does level loading time reduction do you in a MP game? Civ4 - fine on D:\ as well.

However, Dragon Age is on the SSD - frequent loading when walking into houses, etc.

I've got a 60GB with 14GB free. That's Windows, office, some misc utilities, and Dragon Age on C:\ . Everything else (misc games, programs, etc) are on D:\
 
SSD. Your video card will still last a few more games at 1920x1200.

Unfortunately you'll hate to use non SSD computers after you get yours.
