Alright so I decided I will get an SSD JUST for windows and my other most used programs and MAYBE fit 1 game that can always be deleted and swapped with another (If I wanna play Crysis I install it and when I am done I move it to my regular HDD, something along those lines). My Windows folder takes up 18.8gb on the HDD, but there is still some other crap from windows so I think it comes out to about 20-22gb in the end. So lets go with the high, 22gb. I need this to fit and my most frequent programs, google chrome, xfire, ventrilo, TS3. They don't take up much space.

So would a 40gb SSD be the best for just this? How much does a 40gb SSD end up as after being formatted? And which 40gb SSD would be the best then for reliability and speed(I only have SATA II)

40GB is too small for win7 and sp1 and patches, antivirus, regular s/w and 1 game.

I have every single Windows 7 update and have no idea if I have antivirus on or not, I guess I do since its standard with Windows 7 and the folder comes out to 20gb actually(Even less). This is the actual "Windows" folder in /C, and every other thing with "Windows" in it that I could find that actually takes up space(including "Admin" and "System" and that other stuff). Xfire takes 18mb, Ventrilo takes 5mb, TS3 takes 8mb and Google Chrome takes a few KB I think. A huge game takes maybe 15gb. (My oblivion takes 6.5gb which is including morroblivion)

So that comes out to around 36gb if the game was 15gb and I most likely wouldn't install a game like that. So 40gb isn't enough? I will take a 60gb SSD if it is close in price (I saw some Corsairs and OCZs in the $120 range which seems alright I guess)

A 40GB SSD is a false economy. It is going to be too small to make it worthwhile - and you'll spend all your time managing the space. Save up and get a 120GB - that is the smallest SSD I would recommend.

Agreed.

I`m on my Win7 desktop with a handful of the most popular business applications, and a couple SMALL games and I have almost 50gigs free out of my Intel G2 80gig.

The trick is to move your home folder to your mechanical drive so everything on your desktop, pictures, music, and STORAGE doesn't take up space on your SSD.

As you get more space on the SSD when you upgrade then migrate the files back over that you use the most and would notice the snappyness. Me - in the future I will put everything but the mp3s/videos/pics/archives on the SSD, even having documents on there makes browsing files/folders so much better.

DEF need your games on SSD imho.

For better performance and longevity, you have to keep some free space, and more in proportion on a small drive. So a 40GB, while interesting when they first came out as a cheap option, is now a not so good idea, and I'd take a least a 60GB.

Scratch the game then. Just windows and those programs I mentioned. I will get a seperate ssd for games. I want the best reliability and longitiviy for the windows drive. So the intel 40gb is the best for this?
Or if the cheaper crucial m4 64gb is just as reliable as the intel I would consider it.

I think the smallest drive size you want for your boot drive is around 60gb. That is why the Crucial C300 64gb SSD is such a sweet drive. Its cheap, reliable, really fast, and just the right size for a boot drive.

Would the m4 be slower than the c300 on sata 2? Its cheaper so that's why im asking

I'd say at least 60, I use a 73GB Cheetah for 7 and a few games, no apps (I use Linux when I need to get things done) and it's about right. Minus a couple games and a 64 would be good. Of course that's a spinner, and I do keep 20GB free for defragging, not such an issue with an SSD.
