I'm just curious if anyone out there has actually had an SSD die on them from writes? I've recently upgraded my work laptop with an SSD but I've been hesitant to do my home desktop, for the longevity issue.

Or since this is the [H], maybe I should ask...has anyone actually kept the same SSD long enough for it to die on them?
 
This is not even remotely an issue if you have a modern 240GB or larger drive. These are expected to last on the order of 10 years (or longer) of normal desktop usage due to writes. Smaller drives it can be an issue because they have less cells for the wear leveling algorithm to work with but even then you have to try to wear it out. Normal desktop usage will not wear out a drive in a reasonable time frame. One case in point I have an 80GB Intel G1 drive from 2009 in my htpc server. It still has 95% life in it after being used daily since it has been installed in 2009.

Wow, that's good to know. I guess it's time for me to get off the fence then. I've had hard drives fail faster than that!

Assuming the Intel toolbox is accurate, it's showing 100% life usage on my little 80GB x25-m G2 after over 1TB of written data.
 
Its down to 94% (look at Media_Wearout_Indicator) after 35380 hours (4.03613 years) of usage..

I have, yes. The old Intel drives were easy to brick. Things have gotten better since.
 
Some consumer SSD warranties are for a certain amount of data written, while others are just for 3 to 5 years assuming 10GB or 40GB written per day.

10GB a day, every day of the year, is a LOT of data for 99% of consumers. On my Intel 335 240GB, I've written 808 GB since I bought it at the beginning of the year, which is an average of 3.4 GB per day; the Media Wear Out Indicator is still at 100 out of 100. My SSD is rated for 3000 P/E cycles, which works out to around 500TB of writes (uncompressed). Therefore, I anticipate hitting 99 out of 100 on the Wear Out Indicator sometime in 2017. Maybe 2016 if I download a lot of... uh... linux distros.

I got a couple of the old Vertex 1's down to 30% life remaining or so on 24/7 machines in about 4 years.
