I am upgrading an old Toshiba laptop and need to buy a new hard drive. The laptop specifications list the hard drive as SATA Rev 1 (1.5Gbits)....can I use a more recent SATA III or even SSD drive (with obviously less throughput than designed) or am I limited to SATA II since it was backwards compatible with SATA I?

New SATA II drives or older are hard to find that don't cost some crazy high amount....

Thanks

The different SATA revisions are backward compatible.

This is what I understood as well....so in a nutshell SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II ONLY and SATA II is backwards compatible with SATA I ONLY

Just looking for some clarification or real world experience with the same situation...

It's backwards compatible all the way. In both directions.

However early SATA1 implementations can be hit and miss with newer drives. If the laptop is Intel and the SATA is handled by Intel's chipset, you should be fine.
