SSD Intermittently becomes unreadable

Okay so Im getting into a bit of a debate with Tech support about a OCZ Vertex drive that keeps becoming unreadable.

The system specs are in my sig and I use the OCZ drive as a steam drive.
For a couple weeks all seems well and there doesn't seem to be any problems. However after I reboot it (my system typically runs 24/7) the drive will become unreadable. (By unreadable I mean that it cant be accessed at all, it requires me to delete the volume and then recreate then reformat to access the drive again) Also there doesn't seem to be a particular pattern as I have tried to recreate the problem by rebooting repeatedly and even complete shutdown but it wont become unreadable until it feels like it.


OCZ tech asked me to run ATTO (random I/O test) to prove it was their drive but it came back clean.

TL;DR
Main question is there any other test or utility I can run that might be more strenuous or any other thoughts?

I had the same exact issue with a SSD from OCZ Vertex 4, brand new out of the box did it, regardless of updated firmware. The second I replaced it with a different brand Crucial M4 all was good, then I used the OCZ in a different laptop and all was perfect, just turned out the particular laptop had issues with it

Thanks pontiac, at least i have someone else with a similar issue. Though it does leave a rather bad taste in my mouth about the OCZ drive. I hate intermittent issues, I'm getting dejavu like when my car had a strange starting issue the and the dealership refused to own up to the problem and looked at me like I was crazy. Im getting that same feeling from the OCZ tech guys.

Oh well its a cheap drive I got on sale a while back so no biggie but I guess I gotta move it to some other use. I also just picked up a m4 so that will be my new steam drive.

Thus the reason why OCZ went out of business. They can be accredited with launching SSD's into the mainstream that they are today so quickly, but it cost them their entire business. Even Toshiba is going to have a tough time repairing that broken brand. Trying to troubleshoot issues often boiled down to getting a replacement drive or switching to another brand entirely.

As Liger88 may have indicated sometimes it is the system you put it into that is at fault.

It is very difficult to determine if the problem is with the SSD or the other hardware.

Compatibility, some laptops have crappy BIOS. I recently had problems with Samsung 850 pro and OCZ Vertex 4.

Try moving it to another SATA port or another controller. I had to do that with my OCZ

static: good idea might as well try that before I give up on it since it seems (via ATTO) that it works properly. Either way I was planning on upgrading it since it was a smaller drive and wanted to move it to a laptop I have but didnt trust it to be a boot drive. If it stays stable maybe its just some weird glitch with my mobo.

rebootin: I dont think my mobo/controller is that bad but who knows, granted Ive had a couple different samsungs (830 and now 850) and this OCZ and only the OCZ acted up.

Liger88: yea I havent given up completely on OCZ but definitely not confidence inspiring. Now that Toshiba owns them maybe it will be better going forward, I like their spindle drives which have been rock solid in my 24/7 NAS.
