SSD for win7 and another SSD for Programs

Hi guys,

Im new here and would like to ask regarding SSD. I want to use SSD but larger SSD = Massive price so what i wanted to do is buy 2 smaller size SSD that would fit. Will this setup would work as i have 3 disks 2 SSD and 1tb Sata3 hdd.

1st ssd - Should be for windows 7 / OS, like how much memory should this SSD have? will 40gb be enough?
2nd ssd - Will be for programs like adobe producsts e.g premier, ae, photoshop, dreamweaver and other tools that i use, like how much space should i get?
3rd HDD - Will be for my documents, files, saved games, photos videos etc. / Storage

I split 3 disks since i wanted to deepfreeze SSD 1 and unfreeze the other disk SSD 2 and the HDD, the reason why i left the other 2 disk unfreezed is because of frequent updates that will happen in the future and so i could save my documents.

You can do that if you want.

I have no idea what you mean by deepfreeze / unfreezed..

the cost per GB of most SSDs doesn't change much between small and larger sizes unless you're looking at either extreme
any cost savings by using 2 SSDs will like be negated by the space you waste - you can't get the OS SSD 100% full

my suggestion is to map all your user folders (my documents, desktop, etc) on your current installation to a different partition, then see how much space you're using on your OS partition
buy an SSD that's at least 20% bigger than that amount

the space isnt exactly 'wasted'. having empty space on an SSD is actually good because it gives the SSD more memory to wear level on. SSDs are over-provisioned anyway, you are just adding even more over-provisioning by not using all the space.

you can do that. i think it would just be easier, and maybe slightly faster, to have one larger SSD then two smaller ones, but your method should work fine.

SSD 120 GB #1: Windows 7 and some small programs. Approx 50 GB used so a 80 GB SSD would be fine.
SSD 128 GB #2: Games (steam folder included) and some other programs.
1.5 GB HDD : Music and storage.

Personnaly, I would leave most documents on the SSD #1 except large media files that would be kept on the HDD.

It only uses the space if you leave it unpartitioned. Empty space in an active partition is not helping the over-provisioning at all.

Given that larger drives are generally faster, I'd try to get a single larger drive rather than two smaller ones.

They are different size (120GB vs 128GB) and brand (OCZ Agility vs Vertex 2) SSDs. I'm not to keen about Raid setup either. May be that's just me. ;-)

Doh, didn't parse the size difference. Makes sense then. As for raids, eh - if the data is important it is backed up, if it's not then who cares

Windows can use one SSD while other programs use the second. Splitting performance while not mucking with raid. You can then easily upgrade your programs SSD without having to reformat or clone windows.

Yes, but the advantage of an SSD is random access performance, so you don't need to split up the workload like that.

truth, but you'll still be bottlenecked at 250MB/s with just one. Also, you can access two file simultaneously on different disks. It might be negligible, but can still be a performance boost. With a raid setup, the next seek would have to wait for the current transfer to finish. That would be a slight hit to access time.

Funny how quickly 250 MB/s became a "bottleneck". A year and a half ago 120MB/s was the bomb.
