SSD for retro gaming system?

Working on setting up an SSD on my retro gaming system and am wondering if I will see any difference whatsoever between these two drives that I already have.

Samsung 470 128GB 31,000/20,000 IOPS
Liteon 128GB M3s 74,000/70,000 IOPS

The SATA controller is an add-in PCI card so it will max out at 133MB/s.

I'm thinking it won't matter at all except I do not know if the Samsung drive does auto cleanup.
 
I can't imagine you'll see any practical difference between any SSD you use. I don't think of a retro gaming system need much in the way of disk performance. Random I/O would still benefit from an SSD even limited at 133MB/s.
 
Well, just looked up an old article, and it says the Samsung 470 has both garbage collection and wear leveling built in.

Going to go ahead and use it for the retro machine and save the Liteon for a newer machine.

random io of an SSD will help just about anything... I have a retro machine I put an old SATA SSD in with a PCI card, makes a huge difference, even a PIII can fly with an SSD it's impressive
 
I'll second the above. Even the SLOWEST SSD will be infinitely faster than the fastest HDD. I have a measly second gen intel on the wife's PC on a core2duo and that thing still is amazingly fast and response for going on 7 years old.
 
I'll third the above. I put a 32GB MSATA SSD in an old blue Apple G4 tower, and it works wonderfully. (MSATA to IDE adaptor) Computer feels faster than new, running PPC Linux.
 
I ended up having to use the Liteon SSD because the Samsung one was not cooperating at all with the Promise controller (tried two different cards).

It would hang indefinitely and if I tried running Scandisk, it would tell me everything past a certain sector was bad, even though I know that is incorrect.

So it looks like Samsung 470 (PM810) SSDs are not compatible with Promise Sata 150 based PCI cards.
