I asked this in the 750 thread and i got no answer so I guess I'll have to make a new thread. Sorry was hoping to not make a whole new thread :/
1.) Do you think PCIe drives like the Intel 750 will drop by August by a significant amount? I am debating if its best to buy it now or wait til August/September when I build my skylake PC. Intel is the only PCIe drive out with great performance with NVMe but gskill has one coming but date is still unknown so i don't know if that'll even have an effect on pricing at or before August.
2.) I have a 480GB Extreme Pro and its slow to me and i hit the endurance wall like mad and windows starts to stutter. When i pause what I am doing everything returns to normal and if i let the SSD take a few minutes i can go again before it starts to eat shit. This isn't a RAM issue, CPU, or GPU issue (all show to not be at full load/full). It solely happens when the SSD is used a lot for several hours at a time continuously. When the program is paused or finishes using the SSD everything goes to normal again. It also progressively gets worse the longer the trashing goes on so it has to be SSD endurance. The Extreme Pro is also the best SSD out for endurance hence why I bought it and got ride of the 840 that i had, which was even worse. Also i think part of this issue is mixed loads. I know reviews say the Extreme Pro is fairly poor in mixed loads so that could also be a problem I am facing. Plus this has several real world results that save a lot of time and patients over my current drive. The endurance/mixed loads are also a major reason for this drive.
I have a question on write endurance. I am confused on how they give and read these numbers. Do these count write amplifications? Do I go off my SMART reading? according to the 3K P/E concept I should get ~1400 TB, which is fairly close to what smart would come out to be.

So that's:

*I once peaked 100GB per day average over the entire life of the drive but i don't have this in a laptop anymore so i no longer hibernate on it. Although, I still use a lot of writes even without that. I was at 88 GB or so per day but i went up to 92 GB per day after re install and the never ending game rotation and photos/videos being moved around. My writes will tank once I have a 1.2TB drive so that'll be nice but any who.
So 100%/1.86%=53.76*21,133 GB=1,136 TB Close to that 3k P/E cycle amount of ~1400
This is assuming I understand this right and did this right and the numbers I have are correct. So this is why I am completely confused on this 3K P/E, write amplifications, SMART, and advertised endurance of 70 TB total or 35 TB (480GB?) or whatever?
If SMART reads I am doing 80-100 GB per day I am concerned about the life of this drive if the numbers I have are apples to apples.
Can anyone please educate me on this because i have spent a lot of time reading on this and anandtech reviews and articles on this are odd. They talk about write amplification and rated writes as if those don't include amplification and stuff like that or something. So yea I appreciate some enlightenment on this.
Maybe a hyperx predator m.2 be better? Or two in raid 0? Also to me i think 4K is a big importance to me but i can't be sure so I am dead set on getting the best 4K drive to be safe, which appears to be the 750. Also I must have 1TB so Kingston might be out since its 480 GB only unless I can raid them but then I am going to kill crucial CPU resources with an IRST raid :/

The price per GB of the 750 is right in line with the SM951 AHCI, and will probably also basically be a wash with the NVMe version. The SM951 (AHCI or NVMe) are still OEM-only products with finicky compatibility (not to say that NVMe support is great anywhere, but there's something to be said about retail support of a high-end SSD). Furthermore, the Intel 750 is cheaper per GB than any of the other PCIe options in the test roundup. So, dominant performance, significant new tech and value vs. peers? Seems like Gold to me.
While I'm going to very nicely ask Samsung for an SM951 to test, from what I've heard and read they've been iffy about review samples for non-retail drives, and I'm also a little disappointed at the lack of 1TB option.
In terms of endurance, 219TB Total Bytes Written (TBW)/70GB/day is quite nice, but perhaps not market-leading. Gotta provide some incentive to move up to the P3xxx drives.
Another MAJOR, MAJOR point is that the quoted reliability numbers from manufacturers aren't comparable. Have a look at the description of JEDEC testing standards here- http://www.flashmemorysummit.com/English/Collaterals/Proceedings/2011/20110810_T1B_Cox.pdf
You will often have to go into the fine print on a product's datasheet to find the testing methodology used, but the Intel 750's endurance is quoted on the JESD218 standard, while the crazy enormous numbers shown by Kingston for the HyperX Predator are based on JESD219A. What does that mean in practice as we try to compare these numbers? It means that they're apples and oranges.
Compared to some other SSDs in the test or of interest, and with the above caveats, here's how the Intel 750's 219TB/70GB/day stacks up:
- Samsung SM951- because it's OEM-only, Samsung won't be held to endurance figures. One reseller, RamCity, apparently warranties it to 72TBW on the 512gb version (methodology unknown)
- Kingston HyperX Predator - 882TB total (JESD219A)
- Samsung 850 Pro- 300TB total (methodology unknown)
- Samsung 850 EVO 1TB- 150TB total (methodology unknown)
- OCZ RevoDrive 350 480GB - 50GB/day (methodology unknown)
- G.Skill Phoenix Blade 480GB - 192TB total (methodology unknown)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 960GB- >70TB total (methodology unknown)
Samsung's Pro drives are seemingly unkillable, but beyond that, we can't really discern much from these numbers. If you're doing >70GB of writes a day, you're a prime client for a workstation-class drive anyway.
