Hi all. Maybe this is more of a Windows question than anything, but I want to get it right for future situations.

I have a 256GB SSD for my OS and programs, and a few other mechanical drives for files.

I was doing some work on my phone last night, and I deleted an old backup I had, which was cumulatively about 7.5 GB. The process took a little while. The files were on one of the additional mechanical drives, so I didn't think anything of it. Later on, I realized that all 7.5GB of files that I deleted were in the Recycle Bin, so I emptied it. The "permanent delete" went very quickly, so my concern was that it moved the 7.5GB from my mechanical drive to some temporary recycle bin folder on my OS drive (SSD), then deleted from there.

Is this how it works, and should I be concerned? If so, can I move the recycle bin temp folder to one of my mechanical drives? Should I just have another beer and relax?

Well you can configure the recycle bin, however default is on the same drive. Right click on it and select properties.

By default it should not work that way. The recycle bin (if not over the recycle bin quota) does not delete or move any file but it just adds items to list of files that can be deleted in the future (when you are over quota or click empty recycle bin) so this can be a very fast operation.

Also if it worked the way you think there is nothing to worry about. A SSD will not wear out quickly under normal operations. Especially a 256GB one.

Ok, thanks. I'll check how it's set up, but it's a pretty fresh install and I don't remember changing it - from your description, my guess is it's all taking place on the original drive.

My concern wasn't necessarily over the 7.5GB, it was if this was occurring for every delete operation - I could see it filling up my SSD faster than garbage collection or TRIM could take care of it, hurting performance.

Windows Vista/7 explorer is crappy (the previous explorer was also crappy, but differently) so deleting many files will always take time, doesn't mean anything is moved.
