i have decided it is time to get an ssd.

256gb is the smallest i can go for my needs.

i have narrowed it down to 2 drives.

SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256D/AM

and

Corsair Performance Pro Series CSSD-P256GBP-BK

both have great reviews on newegg.

what i am looking for now is the communities opinion on which of these two drives is better.

i am also willing to accept opinions on other manufacturers drives that are 256gb.

my budget for the new drive cannot exceed $400, and would prefer to purchase from newegg.

thanks in advance for all of your help in this decision.

current specs are as follows.

I7-2600k
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z/gen3
16gb corsair vengeance DDR3-1600
2X EVGA GTX 570 2.5GB
500gb SATA 6GB/s
750 SATA 3GB/s
Corsair HX850

They are both great SSDs, and I'd probably throw Plextor's M3 and M3 Pro into the mix, then get whichever is the cheapest.

Edit: The Corsair is a steal for $309.99 AR and this is coming from someone who isn't the biggest Corsair fan in the world. If you're not in a hurry, the Samsung has dropped to ~$290 via Frys before, the M3 is ~$300, and the M3 Pro, which is the best of the four imo, cost a bit more @ ~$375. You honestly won't notice any real world difference between the four. I would have added the m4 if you were looking for a 128GB, but the 256GB m4 actually loses to the 128GB m4 in quite a few read benchmarks.

Out of the two, I recommend the Samsung 830 over the Corsair Performance Pro. Another good option is the Crucial M4.

Many of us here have been recommending those two (Crucial and Samsung) because they don't use SandForce SSD controllers. There have been instances, even with current generation SandForce-based SSDs, where they've suffered from random BSODs in Windows.

Some others may recommend Intel's 510 and 520 SSDs, but they're comparatively more expensive.

in the future, please keep in mind that corsair publishes drives under *every controller* and the performance pro doesn't even use sandforce, it uses the same controller that crucial is using in similar drives. it has the exact same reliability. interestingly enough you also recommend an m4, which the performance pro outbenches in sequential write, random 4k read at any qd, and 4k write at high qd.
