SSD based Raid 0 - Information Please!

Good day to all,

I am thinking about picking up two - three sata 3 SSD's to put in raid 0.

I have only a very basic and superficial knowledge of SSD based storage.

What are the pro's and con's? I'd likely be using on-board raid, is there even a point to doing this with software managed raid's?

I'd be looking at placing OS and some or all of my games on the SSD based storage. Bulk data I would keep on my existing magnetic drives.

In relation to this, is there a less expensive PCI-E hardware raid solution with 3-4 ports? Preferably under $200 (meaning I might be able to pay for it) that would support sata 3 and do a reasonable job with raid-0.

Three points of failure with 3xSSD in raid 0.
Check motherboard and SSD to make sure TRIM is supported in RAID

There's a point of diminishing returns... in a single workstation, I'm not sure how much you'll really notice an improvement with such a setup.

The question you should be asking is "Is there any point to doing RAID 0 with SSDs?"

If you're doing it to increase capacity, then yes. If you're doing it to increase performance, then no. RAID 0 may improve seek time, but for gaming, even HDD RAID 0 doesn't necessarily show much performance improvement. Seek times on SSDs are already so ridiculously fast that RAID 0 won't make it seem any faster to the user.

As mentioned above, what little practical improvement in performance is probably not even close to making up for the cons of increased chances of failure (if one SSD fails, you lose ALL data) and the potential difficultly of TRIM support.
