Heyas.

I'm currently running a setup with a E8400 CPU, a GTX260 GPU, and a WD Black 640 HD.

I'm going to be upgrading the system to and wanted to know if it is worth replacing my hard drive with a 256GB SSD?

I have about 190GB on my current hard drive, and use the computer for general web surfing, and gaming. Usually TF2, DayZ, BF3, and GW2 when it launches. Lately I've also been playing around with Virtual Box and running a Linux OS inside it so I can learn about Linux.

Will I see any difference in my games with an SSD, or am I better off just keeping the 640 and saving the cash? Start up times don't matter too much as my computer is on all day once I start it in the morning.

Any advise appreciated.
 
It is always worth making an SSD your OS drive, and then making your HDD a bulk storage drive and/or overflow for applications which don't fit on the SSD.
 
SSD will for sure be a worthwhile upgrade. The crucial M4 is supposed to the best/fastest for your money.
 
SSD is a good upgrade, it'll be faster than a hard drive.

If you want AES encryption a intel 330 is a good choice. Intel 520 is also a option if you want a longer warranty period. 5 year vs 3 years.
 
SSD is one of the best upgrades you can make as far as actually being able to see a real-world increase.

My 3 recommendations would be a Crucial M4, Samsung 830, or Intel 330. Can't go wrong with any of the three. Just pick whichever one is on sale.

LOL. Yes, maybe OCZ made a good SSD once. That one that came off the production line sometime in August 2010, that one was good. They must have got very lucky with that particular SSD, because all the other million or so OCZ SSDs that came off the production line are really awful! :(

Wow, it's a surprise to see all of the positive responses in terms of having an SSD as a main drive. I was thinking that it wouldn't make much of a difference for the type of usage that I have. I saw a few of the hot deals posts about the M4 256GB, and also read that the Intel drives are highly regarded in terms of reliability.

I didn't want to lose the trim capability of the SSD by running both drives, but then I read that technically it wouldn't be a raid setup if I use an SSD as an OS/gaming drive and the 640 black as a storage drive. That is correct isn't it?

If so, I guess it's good timing as it seems that there have been a lot of SSD sales lately...

I recently built a new computer with a 256 GB Crucial M4 as my boot drive....and it has been night and day over my previous computer. I wish now I had sprung for an SSD a while ago. Just the speed booting Windows made it worth the investment.
 
Running two drives in a system is not the same as running RAID so you don't have to worry about TRIM.

I'm leaning toward upgrading my OS/games drive to SSD after reading all of your replies.
I'll be saving for a few months to afford one, but from reading the hotdeals forum it seems that the prices on them have been dropping consistently.

It seems only a few months ago they were crossing the $1/GB line. Now it's pretty common to see sales for 256GB for $180 or so, and 128GB for $90.

OCZ's have always been cheaper. You get what you pay for. I too wouldn't put one in my box, even if it was given to me for free...
 
I love having an SSD and think that they makes one of the biggest impacts on total system performance. As far as SSD to look at with the resent price drop on Intel® SSDs I would have a hard time looking anywhere else for a drive.
