SSD 4k aligning - who else here does it?

I just purchased a 120GB Patriot Pyro SSD a few days ago and noticed on their site that they list the IOPS specification as being with the drive "4k aligned".

The Dell laptops we have been getting also come with an insert that says to maximize performance to make sure you 4k align the drive.

On my Patriout drive I did ATTO tests before/after and notice a bit of an increase in throughput.

However, when actually transferring files to the SSD, I saw a much bigger difference in performance.

The easy way to align the drive is to use diskpart.

When you create the partition, you specify "offset=4096"

I was just curious if anybody else has been 4k aligning their SSDs and also seeing a definite performance difference compared to just letting Windows setup the drive.
 
Windows 7 does it automatically, so it is really only people using XP that have problems (not sure about Vista).

Not from my experience.

Like I said.. I did before/after tests in ATTO and by watching real file tranfer speeds.

I also looked at the partition with diskpart. With it 4k aligned, it should say that there is 3072 bytes free.

With Windows 7 setting up the drive, it left 0 bytes free.

I guess it may be different IF you are doing a clean install of Windows onto the SSD, but it doesn't appear to align it if you are just adding it as an additional drive.

If it is formatted by Windows after you install the drive then it should be aligned properly, even if it isn't the install drive - but I haven't checked that myself. Most people use AS-SSD to check the alignment, so I'm not sure what diskpart would say.
