SR-2 power question

As I said above I have an SR-2 and am reading the SR-2 thread... whew...
I understand to plug in the two 8 pin power connectors but what about the PCI-e power connectors?

I plan on overclocking and the manual only says these are optional.
Oh and this will be a dedicated folder... so only one sata drive and one GTX460 video card. Probably will gpu fold on it.

The PCI-E ones are really only needed with high end GPU's in the PCI-E slots, which would be sucking down a bunch of power.
 
Ok so the 460's have their own power connection so that should be ok.

I have an older 1KW PC Power and Cooling supply. Cant find any info on it but it has 3 rails. (not happy about that)

So does anyone know how to figure out which lines are hooked to which rail? I want to use two molex to power the second 8 pin connector. Thats my plan as it only has 1 8 pin from the PSU.

People have reported bad experiences when using those adapters. A much better idea would be to get a PCIe to EPS adapter, only costs a few $
 
It will be either on a review, like jonnyguru or on the manuactuers website.

I've also been told to use the bottom pci-e ports the addition pci-e line needs to be there, but i can't get just those 2 on by themselves.

I have an email in to PC Power and Cooling to identify the rails on this PSU or hopefully someone here will know what rails attach to what lines. That way I can make sure I am feeding this beast properly.

OR... plan B ... I could change to the PC Power and Cooling 750w one I have on the bench, as it has more PCIe connectors. Just not sure if 750 is enough to run this thing. Havent seen all the posts on how much power is needed.

Depends on how far you overclock, I think there were power figures in the old SR-2 thread from way back, i'll see if i can find it.

The CPU PCI-e connectors are only needed for super high overclocks. I was running a pair of 5649 ES at 3.8GHz without them. You do need one PCI-e connector on the MB to power up slots 4-8. A molex to PCI-e adapter would be fine for that.

Not enough wattage, risk of fire, risk of instability etc.
 
Thanks... ya saw that one. I am running "special" L5640's in this thing. tdp was 60w so ...

Meanwhile ... reading the sr-2 thread. hehe
 
You need two of the on board pcie plugs in place...... On mobile, ill elaborate when I get to a pc
 
Yah been reading that on the sr2 thread. So...

Looks like I will probably use the 750 Silencer PSU as it has more connectors. Besides I see wattage numbers of less than 650 for overclocks even.
 
Ok, ill elaborate now :D

For my setup I had(have) 2x L5639 (1 less turbo m ultiplier than you), I was running it just fine folding on CPU's only with a Seasonic x750, only had an 8400GS in as the GPU though. You should be fine with a GTX 460 folding though.


The two PCIE connectors you will want connected are the ones directly beside the CPU Power plugs. , I personally have all the PCIE plugs plugged in (solely because I did have 2x 6970s in, however one is now dead .... ), but with the Overclocks you will want the extra power, it wont hurt if you have the ability to do it ;)
 
Yah well looks like the 750w will be the way to go. I understand about the connections. 6pin next to the 8 pin. I had bought a 1KW PC&P&C supply some time back to use with this board and THOUGHT I would need that much power. Turns out from what I am reading that 750 is plenty. Besides it IS a PC Power and Cooling psu. hehe
