I got an old ASUS L5C that I am about to put vista on. But I would like to upgrade it first. I intend to stick 2 sticks of 1GB modules into it but I'm not sure whether it would work because on the ASUS support FAQ:
Question:
Can I use 1GB memory on L5C notebook?

Answer
No, we don’t recommend using 1GB memory module on L5C since 1GB memory is not fully tested in our lab.

However! I worked at a ASUS service centre for a short time a few years ago and before I left I took a copy of the L5C's service guide (technically I shouldn't have but oh well) which also contained its complete H/W spec which says:
Chip Set:
North Bridge - SIS 648
South Bridge - SIS 963
Memory System
support 200/266 MHz DDR devices
support 64Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb, and
512Mb tech- nologies for x8 and x16 devices
configurable optional ECC operation
For DDR, Max of 2 Double-Sided SO-DIMM(4 rows populated) with unbuffered
PC2100 DDR (w/ or w/o ECC)
2GB maximum using 512Mb technology
Who should I believe? Personally I'm willing to try sticking the modules in first. Currently it has 2 sticks of 512 in it.

Um... You live close to a Fry's?

They say they didn't test it, why don't you? :p

Pick up your memory at a store with a liberal return policy.

Nop, I live in Middle Earth. Just ordered the sticks and should be delivered by the time I get home.

Good luck with that. Make sure to do thorough tests during your return window.
